As every American knows, our nation's favorite pastime is also big business. The last fifteen years have been exceptionally good to the business of baseball-with the growth in fan attendance, the spread of cable television, the burgeoning interest in cards and other baseball memorabilia, the historical appreciation of franchise values, the emergence of a powerful players' union, and average salaries that are almost twenty times their pre-1976 levels. Yet at this time of prosperity, major economic issues trouble the sport: the threat of franchise relocation, the continual flash points in collective bargaining, the growing commercialization of the game, the club owners' collusive response to free agency, lingering concerns of race discrimination, and the arguably tenuous link between player pay and performance. Salaries in major league baseball are examined based on a complete representation of the salary structure in the sport in 1987 (as reported by the New York Times), using a two-equation model of pay & performance for pitchers & nonpitchers. Findings indicate that performance measures are strongly relied on to determine salaries; there is no evidence of racial differentiation in salary levels. 37 References. The determinants of net interstate migration in the US are analyzed, utilizing data from the Current Population Reports & other governmental sources to analyze effects of various factors on whites & blacks in the periods 1960-1970 & 1971-1975. A cross-state regression analysis is performed. Traditional economic determinants have broken down in the post-1970 period for both white & black migration. In this article, the authors provide a list of the top 10 ways to become a "compleat" policy analyst, drawing on lessons from their own experience as policy analysts. The authors make no claims that their list is unique. However, they suggest the items included within it are supported in the academic and practitioner‐oriented literature. Counting down from number 10—"The compleat policy analyst knows how to skip steps"—the authors present and comment on the items in turn. The authors suggest the number one concern for practitioners is "to live with uncertainty." Other items on the list include eating crow, loving numbers, and acknowledging values and politics in the analytical process.
In Markov chain studies of occupational mobility, an interesting empirical pattern has been reported. Certain transrtion matrix eigenvectors provide surprisingly accurate proxies for occupational status. Through a number of formal illustra tions, this paper suggests why the pattern might in theory be expected, in the occupational mobility context and in other mobility contexts.
