This article discusses sustainable development in the Himalayas, and in particular disputes the solutions proposed by McNeill and other World Bank experts of "cutting down more forests in the Southern part of the country (Nepal) ... so as to develop the land for agriculture". This solution, of moving more people to the flatland, constitutes the very problem which endangers both people and environment in the region. (DSE/DÜI)

A complex of explanations are offered for the explosive growth in the informal sector, including the efforts by many entrepreneurs to evade bureaucratic obstacles to productivity and profitability. Social consequences to informal sector workers are outlined
