Background: Rational use of medicines is important for safe and cost-effective pharmacotherapy. However, nearly half of the medicines available in the market may be used irrationally. The present study assessed the perceptions and knowledge about rational medicine use and responsible self -medication among participants before and after an educational intervention at KIST Medical College, Lalitpur.Methods: An educational module was conducted among healthcare professionals, media personnel and female community health volunteers. The questionnaire was administered before and immediately after the module. The areas addressed were rational medicine use, ethical prescribing, rational drug use situation in Nepal, pharmaceutical promotion, rational self-medication, safe use of antibiotics, and drug use problems in Nepal.Results: Among healthcare professionals, the rational drug use situation in Nepal and the total score significantly increased post-intervention (p<0.05). Among media personnel the mean scores increased significantly in pharmaceutical promotion and drug use problems in Nepal areas but there was a significant decrease in safe use of antibiotics. The pre-intervention pharmaceutical promotion score was significantly higher among healthcare professionals compared to media personnel while the rational self-medication scores were highest among female community health volunteers, safe use of antibiotics scores were highest among the media personnel. Post-intervention the mean pharmaceutical promotion scores was highest among healthcare professionals, rational self-medication scores among female community health volunteers, safe use of antibiotics, drug use problems in Nepal and total scores were highest among the media personnel. Conclusions: There were differences in the mean pre-intervention scores among different subgroups. A single session may not be enough to bring about significant changes in knowledge and perception. The retention of knowledge could be measured in future studies.

Background: Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) can be a big threat to the health of people in Nepal as a variety of medicines are consumed in the country. Involving consumers in pharmacovigilance can strengthen ADR reporting. The study aims to find out knowledge, attitude and practice regarding pharmacovigilance and consumer pharmacovigilance among consumers at Lalitpur district, NepalMethods: It was carried out in outpatients visiting in KIST Medical College and Teaching Hospital, Lalitpur, Nepal. Participant's knowledge, attitude and practice were measured by noting their agreement with a set of 21 statements along with multiple choice and open ended questions.Results: A total of 157 outpatients were surveyed. The knowledge scores for males (12) was better compared to the females (11), but the scores for attitude and practice were same for both groups. The maximum score for knowledge was 29, attitude was 6 and practice was 10. The overall KAP scores was 45. The total scores for knowledge, attitude and practice for males (24) were better compared to female (22) respondents. Seventy-one patients (68%) who participated in this study favoured establishing a consumer centre for obtaining information about ADRs.Conclusions: Knowledge scores among consumers regarding pharmacovigilance is low and require advocacy and improvement.

Background: This study was conducted to identify knowledge, attitude and practice of the public in relation to eye health and to assess their knowledge of eye health seeking behaviour.Methods: A three-stage cluster survey was conducted in 15 selected districts of the five development regions of Nepal from May to December 2017.One hundred clusters and fifty households from each cluster were randomly selected. A semi-structured questionnaire was developed in English and translated into Nepali and back translated by experts. Data were entered in CSPro 5.0.3 software and imported to R 3.4.1 software for analysis.Results: Three fourth of respondents were between the age of 20-59 years (84 %) and one third were female (37.4%). 78% of respondents had basic knowledge about ocular diseases (ranging from 68 to 95%). No single method was found to be more appropriate than the other to provide eye health education to the people living in different geographical locations. Radio was more appropriate to provide health education in Doti and television in Saptari district. Around 2% of the people still depended on drug retailers, 0.6% on self-medication and 0.1% on traditional healers for treatment. Conclusions: The knowledge, attitude and practice of the respondents varied between various districts and with different demographic characteristics. The overall knowledge, attitude and practice score and respondent's knowledge about common eye diseases requires improvement. Different methods can be used to educate public about eye health and common eye diseases.Keywords: Attitude; eye care; knowledge; Nepal; practice; services.
