For me, personally, Wittgenstein's philosophy poses the greatest challenge: if he is right, the sort of philosophy I am attempting to do is impossible. Wittgenstein argued powerfully that there can be no such thing as a general philosophical theory of language, mind, consciousness, society, and so on. I wanted and still do want to do precisely that: to present a general philosophical theory of language, mind, consciousness, society, and so on.

AbstractHindriks and Guala (2014) hope to provide a unified account of institutional theory that will combine the accounts of regulative rules, constitutive rules, and equilibria. I argue that only the constitutive rule approach has any possibility of success, and that the other two cannot even pose the right questions, much less answer them. Hindriks and Guala think constitutive rules can be reduced to regulative rules. I argue that their reduction is mistaken. The key to understanding social ontology is understanding status functions.

Der Relativismus hat eine lange Tradition in der Kultur- und Geistesgeschichte und tritt in verschiedenen Formen auf: zum Beispiel als Relativismus gegenüber Wissen und Wahrheit, moralischen Werten, ästhetischer Qualität und kulturellen Normen. Im Mittelpunkt des Forschungsinteresses steht eine Studie von Paul Boghossian, die eine kritische Auseinandersetzung vor allem mit dem Relativismus gegenüber Wissen und Wahrheit ist. Ihr Grundgedanke lautet, dass Ansprüche auf objektive Wahrheit und objektives Wissen tatsächlich nur relativ zu einer Reihe von kulturellen Einstellungen oder einer anderen subjektiven Weise der Weltwahrnehmung gültig sind. Außerdem können dem Relativismus zufolge miteinander unvereinbare Aussagen "gleiche Gültigkeit" haben. Es kann keine universell gültigen Wissensansprüche geben. Die gegenwärtig einflussreichste Form des Relativismus ist der Sozialkonstruktivismus, den Boghossian als eine Tatsache versteht, die eine gesellschaftlich konstruierte Tatsache ist, die nur dann, wenn es notwendig, wahr ist. Der Sozialkonstruktivist ist bemüht, Konstruktionen da zu entlarven, wo niemand sie vermutet hätte, wo etwas, was in Wirklichkeit wesentlich gesellschaftlich ist, sich als etwas Naturgegebenes maskiert.
