As suburban poverty has become more prevalent in recent years, low-income neighbourhoods have emerged outside of many central cities. In many regions, however, there remains a stark divide between the core city and outlying areas. Measuring poverty concentrations, therefore, depends on the choice of geographic scale. Widespread urban poverty results in low measures of poverty concentration inside core cities, and whether this increases or decreases once suburbs are considered depends on specific regional characteristics. This study calculates 'isolation gradients' for the population in poverty in the 50 largest US Metropolitan areas (MSAs), extending from the core city to beyond the MSA level. A variety of patterns emerge, including sharp increases in isolation scores outside the city (as in Detroit) as well as decreases (for Atlanta). An econometric analysis of the ratio of MSA-level to core-city isolation scores finds that, controlling for land area and core-city poverty rates, much of the variance is explained by per-capita income and differences in racial segregation. A comparison of gradients in 2000 and 2015–2019 for a subset of cities shows additional patterns of suburban and urban convergence and divergence.

A Ecologia Política e a História Ambiental do século XXI mostram como a conservação biocêntica somente zela pela preservação natural e o desenvolvimento predatório favorece apenas alguns interesses econômicos específicos, de forma que ambos promovem ampla exclusão social. Em reação à injustiça ambiental e social, populações rurais históricas buscam formas de resistir ao cerceamento ambiental resultante da conservação biocêntrica global. A perspectiva relacional, por sua vez, permite entender melhor a complexidade e as contradições das estratégias de permanência no lugar que no país são baseadas em reservas de desenvolvimento sustentável e de territórios étnicos. A visão híbrida mesclando as três abordagens é ilustrada em dois casos empíricos, um na Amazônia no qual existe conflito por território entre indígenas e ribeirinhos e outro no Pantanal envolvendo cooperação entre os dois grupos étnicos.

Historian James Laver described the cyclical nature of fashion as taking almost 50 years for a particular style or decade to be remembered as romantic. The 1980s are often overlooked by fashion historians as garish or vulgar, best left to the confines of history. During the global financial crisis of 2007–08, direct quotations from the 1980s and television show Dynasty (1981–89) appeared on the catwalks of major designers. An interest in the decade of greed and excess was revived in a time of economic austerity: were we dressing up to cover up our financial shortcomings? Fashion is yet again in the midst of a 1980s renaissance; however, in this time of sociopolitical uncertainty, the perspective has shifted as designers immerse themselves in the creativity and showmanship of the decade. One designer at the apex of this resurgence was Marc Jacobs in his Autumn/Winter 2018 catwalk presentation. Although not the first designer to hone in on the trend, Jacobs' collection was a homage to 1980s popular culture and the showmanship of haute couture. One notable visual influence was the work of fashion illustrator Tony Viramontes (1956–88), whose genius captured the essence of the decade. Through analysis of the recent vogue for 1980s revivalism, alongside the ingenuity of the decade's most energic fashion illustrator, Tony Viramontes, this article will attempt to decode Marc Jacobs' collection for his eponymous label and consider the vocabulary of 1980s fashion as truly worthy of genuine artistic examination by fashion scholars and contemporary fashion designers.

Potential users of grey-market substances seek out internet drug websites to gather legal high information. However, where previous researchers have investigated drug wikis as sources of drug information, few have looked into the drug forums where an abundance of legal-high information is created. Knowledge is produced on internet drug forums through social processes of drug information sharing and relating personal experiences. These knowledge production efforts are a response to internet drug forum members' perceived need to objectively understand a drug's behavior. This community perspective, therefore, shapes online drug forum information sharing into a marginal form of citizen science – one that does not incorporate scientist oversight or directly engage with institutional science. The article argues that drug use becomes a social ritual whereby the sharing of drug information is an ethical practice. Additionally, because first-hand experience is needed to create drug information on new substances, a moral undertone is imposed onto drug experimentation.

Drawing on large datasets, including the Baldus study which demonstrated racial bias in sentencing decisions, this book considers the ways in which social characteristics such as race, class, moral reputation, organizational status affect legal decision making, and the wide discrepancies in the use of capital punishment. Geometrical Justice will be of interest to those engaged in criminal justice, criminology and socio-legal studies, as well as students taking courses on sentencing, corrections and capital punishment"--

Community-engaged scholarship is at a transitional moment, seeking to effect cultural change in academic and research institutions, which will expand the concept of scholarship to encompass the methodologies and definitions of scholarship embodied in community-university research and engagement. Open scholarship is similarly employed in transforming scholarship to broaden its scope, influence and impact beyond traditional modes of academic practice. Written from the perspective of practitioners of open access publishing, this article explores the development and current state of the open movement and considers intersections and opportunities for collaboration with community-engaged scholarship.
