A project, sponsored by the Comm on Cross-Cultural Educ of the SSRC, obtained impressions of the US from hundreds of Swedes from all walks of life, but the conclusions rest on research in Sweden in which 50 selected S's & acquaintances of these S's were interviewed. Each of these S's had studied somewhere in the US for one yr or more between 1920 & 1953. The type of Swedish S's who come to the US are examined. Favorable reactions were obtained on US hospitality, generosity, optimism, & teamwork. They were shocked at some of the political practices within US political parties, but understand & respect US political ideals. 'Swedes tend to retain an image of America as a land of limitless resources, vast distances, massive buildings, assembly-line production.' They are critical of the lack of intellectual & cultural interests. One cannot generalize about the Swedish image of American religion since it runs the gamut of all possible attitudes. The educ'ly disciplined Swede feels that the US high school is all play, but he finds much in the Coll system he prizes (class discussion, the close contact between teachers & S's, & the extracurricular activities). There is an examination of sectional & professional variations among Swedish students settling in various parts of the US, the position of the returnee & US influence in Sweden.
