»Tropenliebe« erzählt die Geschichte von Paul und Fritz Sarasin, zweier reicher Patriziersöhne und Naturforscher aus Basel. Die Großvettern reisten um 1900 durch die asiatischen Kolonien Großbritanniens und der Niederlande, um auf tropischen Inseln fernab ihrer beengten Heimat Raum für ihre Liebe zueinanderzufinden. Zugleich verfolgten sie große wissenschaftliche Projekte: Bei ihrer Rückkehr brachten sie Hunderttausende Pflanzen, Tiere und ethnografische Objekte mit nach Basel, wo sie das »Völkerkundemuseum« gründeten. In Indonesien halfen sie den Niederländern, Celebes (heute Sulawesi), eine der größten Inseln ihres Kolonialreichs, zu erobern. In Deutschland feierte man sie als Pioniere der »Rassenforschung«. Die Geschichte von Liebe und Gewalt in Südostasien wirft ein neues Licht auf die deutsche und niederländische Kolonialgeschichte sowie auf jene der Schweiz, die lange dachte, dass sie gar keine hätte.

This case study on two Swiss naturalists illustrates some of the ways scientific exploration of planet earth was connected to imperial conquest in the Dutch East Indies at around 1900. Looking for answers for zoogeographical problems on the island of Celebes the Swiss benefited from and enabled Dutch colonial invasion of the island. The case illustrates that the Dutch empire was a site of scientific competition among a transnational community of scholars. Finally, the case illustrates how scientific knowledge on planet earth was shaped by and contributed to colonial culture.

AbstractThe largest "multinational" employers (avant la letter) were European India companies and colonial armies. Between the seventeenth and twentieth centuries, they recruited millions of mercenaries and soldiers from all over Europe, mostly from lower social classes. Beginning in the nineteenth century, they offered certain welfare-state services to these men and their legitimate and illegitimate families in Europe and the colonies. To maintain these systems, colonial states depended on cooperation with local, regional, and national administrations throughout Europe. However, the economic and welfare-state dimensions of violent European expansion have hitherto hardly been studied. This article uses the example of the Dutch colonial army to show for the first time how much money flowed from the colonies to lower-class European families. It analyses the transimperial networks of the Dutch colonial bureaucracy, and shows why men, women, and children in Europe and Asia, from diverse social backgrounds and subjected to dissimilar racial regimes, were affected quite differently by this global military labour market.
