This article attempts to explicate the subjective variable satisfaction with life in general by means of the objective variable income. The reason for this study is that, so far, the objective living conditions have been found to have little effect on the subjective feelings of people. Several different approaches have been used to estimate the strength of this relationship. First, correction for measurement errors was tried, then an alternative formulation of the relationship was tested using difference scores instead of the original variables. Next, nonlinear relationships between these variables were introduced. None of these methods led to any substantial strengthening of the relationship. Finally, a model was tested controlling for lagged variables and correcting for measurement errors in a panel design. The combination of these changes led to a considerable effect of the objective variable on satisfaction. This article shows how biased estimates of relationships can be. A specific combination of approaches led to a fundamentally different result.

Following the Treaty of Maastricht (Netherlands), the European Union (EU) entered a political crisis. Where held, public-demanded referenda over the treaty did not produce clear mandates for European integration. This was the first occasion on which politicians were confronted with strong opposition to European integration. Here, it is argued that such a crisis of political legitimation can recur at any time, because the general public lacks information about European policies, is generally not interested, & has no strong opinion. In this situation, public support for any kind of policy regarding European integration can be swayed rather easily as demonstrated via survey data from 1,691 adults in the Netherlands. 1 Table, 1 Appendix, 24 References. L'évaluation des instruments de mesure par analyse secondaire d'études multitraits-multiméthodes. La qualité des données d'une enquête peut être affectée par plusieurs caractéristiques des instruments de mesure, comme la longueur de la question et la manière dont elle est posée, la disposition de l'échelle de réponse, le nombre et l'intitulé des modalités de réponse. Pour évaluer ces instruments de mesure on utilise souvent la procédure multitrait-multiméthode. Cette manière de faire a été introduite d'abord par Campbell et Fiske (1959) qui ont suggéré de mesurer chacun des traits avec plusieurs méthodes et ont proposé des règles pour en déduire la validité d'une manière qui soit convergente et discriminante directement d'une matrice de corrélation multitrait-multiméthode. Dans un travail récent, l'analyse factorielle confirmatoire est utilisée principalement pour analyser des données multitraits-multiméthodes et pour en estlmer la validité, la fiabilité et les effets de méthodes. Andrews (1984) fut le premier à utiliser cette manière de faire dans une étude de large envergure destinée à évaluer plusieurs instruments de mesure d'enquêtes américaines et canadiennes. Tout récemment, une version modifiée du modèle causal a fait l'analyse de matrices multitraits-multiméthodes en utilisant l'analyse factorielle confirmatoire. Le modèle factoriel du second ordre est utilisé dans un projet de recherche comparatif international en cours. Dans ce projet international, 15 pays sont en train de rassembler des données multitraits-multimethodes. et une analyse secondaire sera faite sur cet ensemble de données afin de faire une évaluation des instruments de mesure dans la ligne développée par l'étude d'Andrews. La procédure suivie par ce projet international est validée par une enquête de grande envergure sur le degré de satisfaction dans la vie. Pour cette enquête, des données sur le degré de satisfaction dans la vie en général et à propos de différentes aspects de la vie ont été collectées dans dix différents pays d'Europe. On montre comment les résultats de cette analyse secondaire des différentes données peuvent être utilisés pour corriger les erreurs de mesure d'une modélisation du degré de satisfaction dans la vie.

Arms races have been the subject of many and various explanations, but of few formal theories which manage to combine the virtues of plausibility and parsimony. Perhaps the best known is Richardson's, to which interesting modifications have been proposed by Smoker, Saaty and most recently Hamblin et al.2 Common to all these models is the assumption that arms races can be explained by an action-reaction process between the two nations involved.
