Antonio Gramsci : the man, his politics, and his conception of religion -- The politics of religion in plantation society -- Black theology : a weapon in the struggle for freedom -- "I am a non-denominational Christian and a Marxist socialist" -- "We shall utilize propaganda in our fight" -- A Gramscian analysis of the African and European politico-religious struggle

This study employs Gramscian theory as an interpretive grid in examining the use of Christianity by European colonizers to facilitate their oppression of Africans on the continent and in diaspora. The work clarifies how the western powers utilized their religion in North America, Ghana, South Africa, and Kenya to justify their exploitation of Blacks and how many Africans, as Christian converts, assisted them to accomplish their imperialist goals. In addition, this research explains how other Blacks, in these same locations, interpreted their own religious tradition or revised western Christian.

The author examines the ideological history of the Muslim Brotherhood from its genesis in 1928 until 1953, the date Egypt declared itself a republic after 70 years of British domination. He treats this history as a case study and employs Gramscian theory to interpret his findings. He then applies analytic generalization to the resulting observations to determine how his research might amplify Gramsci's ideas. Finally, he argues that the Brotherhood produced an Islamic ideology that expands Gramscian thought pursuant to national governance, cultural criticism, formal education, and military defense.

This article examines the antebellum popular culture that was created by pro-slavery intellectuals and that contributed to the subordination of female African slaves. It argues that southern ideologues produced a dominant ideology that facilitated the exploitation of enslaved Black women and contributed to the social construction of their gender. This article contributes to Black feminist theory that, since the early 1970s, has been developing as a counter-hegemonic advocate for the subaltern African American woman.
