Presents the comments of participants in a discussion about the nature of the current global financial crisis that recently occurred at the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) Institute of Europe. Nikolai Shmelev, Director of the RAS Institute of Europe, suggested the need for a "third way" that accepts the market economy but not the market society. While Research Associate Ivan Ivanov described the crisis as a signal for renewal, Sergei Rogov, Director of the RAS Institute for US & Canada Studies, focused on events in the US that are closely linked to the crisis. Rusian Grinberg, Director of the RAS Institute of Economics, argued that market fundamentalism has outlived its usefulness but Keynesianism is not an alternative. Valentin Fedorov & Aleksei Gromyko, Deputy Directors of RAS Institute of Europe, respectfully suggested establishing a new international oversight organization to avert future financial crises, & emphasized that the crisis is systemic, not financial & structural. The final participant, Professor & Research Associate Yuri Rubinsky, called the crisis a "financial Chernobyl.". J. Lindroth
