Diversity in patterns of family formation has stimulated interest in finding strategies for describing life cycle experience which accommodate the varied ways in which families now develop. This paper reviews the main approaches that have been suggested and proposes a life cycle classification to chart stages of life in major sections of the population. This framework extends life cycle analysis to include several types of cycles, each with its own stages. The definitions and classification criteria adopted permit the inclusion of single parents, de facto couples and step parents in life cycle analysis, and thereby provide a basis for a more comprehensive view of the family development experience of cohorts. An application of the framework to data on female birth cohorts in Australia shows the diversity in contemporary life cycle experience, the importance of recognising de facto marriages in life cycle studies, and the recent dramatic decline in the prevalence of conventional nuclear families.

The greatest threat to freedom of the press in Korea is not governmental control but economic conditions, in the author's view. A nationally recognized school of journalism could do much to raise the level of the press, even though there is no shortage of personnel for journalistic enterprises.
