Papers delivered at the 1997 conferences in Cagliari, Sardinia, & Naples, Italy, on the works of Antonio Gramsci are reviewed. It is contended that the role of the Italian government & universities in promoting Gramsci's work & the presence of international scholars illustrate Gramsci's global influence. Papers presented in Cagliari discussed the following topics: factors that contributed to communism's downfall in Eastern Europe; Gramsci's language use in his Letters from Prison; civil society; & philosophy & religion. Although the Naples conference was primarily designed to strengthen & create a new administrative structure for the International Gramsci Society, it is noted that the Naples meeting produced papers that addressed Soviet socialism, the emergence of subaltern study groups, Gramsci's notion of historical materialism, the creation of an international Marxism, & civil society.
