In Modernity and Ambivalence (Cambridge: Polity Press, 1991 [see listing in IRPS No. 65]), Zygmunt Bauman addresses the theme of modern ambivalence through a critical analysis of modernity, a discussion of the issue of German Jewish identity & assimilation, & a critical reading of postmodernity. Two arguments organize the book: that the overdeterministic aspects of the modern project itself produced its dystopian Other, & that the Holocaust should not be interpreted as an eruption of premodern forces into the fabric of German modernization, nor as a novel historical experience; rather, it ought to be seen as a constitutive part of political modernity's self-identification. It is noted that the scandal of ambivalence about which Bauman writes is also the scandal of elective affinity between legislative reason & governance by the state. Bauman also draws on the notion of cultural homogeneity to explore key figures in Western modernity, including Karl Marx, Sigmund Freud, & Franz Kafka. Bauman is criticized for presenting an uncertain periodization of modernity, but praised for presenting a witty & engaging take on postmodernity. 5 References. W. Howard
