AbstractIn this paper, monthly loads in the streamflows from a number of UK catchments were calculated using all available chemical data and two degraded data sets comprising one value per month, thus simulating the 'harmonized monitoring scheme'of the Environment Agency †. These degraded data sets represent the lowest and highest concentrations of the various chemical determinands. Two‐load calculation algorithms were used; one employing continuous‐flow records plus instantaneous values, and the other employing instantaneous values only. The results of these algorithms were compared for each determinand ‐ in terms of absolute values and the range of values possible using the degraded monthly sampling intervals.

Though the reunification of Germany has publicly appeared to proceed in a smooth & orderly fashion, it was accomplished only through great statesmanship. Numerous problems had to be & are still being resolved: (1) selection & implementation of the appropriate constitutional procedure to achieve reunification; (2) resolution of problems involving relationships of the two Germanys with other countries, including military alliances & Germany's membership in the European Community; (3) resolution of economic problems, eg, the merging of two ideologically opposed economies, the disastrous state of the East German economy, & price, wage level, & social security integration; & (4) the dismantling of the East German state & its institutions, including the military, the state security service, & the civil service. There is increasing disquiet among course organizers about trainees who sit the MRCGP examination before completing vocational training. An alternative arrangement is proposed for trainees to undergo continuous assessment during vocational training with a more clinical end-point assessment than the current MRCGP examination. Career progression for general practitioners would then be available in the form of the MRCGP examination after a number of years in practice and the FRCGP by assessment at a later stage. It is suggested that the government might wish to reward evidence of a commitment to continuing education.
