"Reading The Phenomenology of Spirit through a linguistic lens, Jeffrey Reid provides an original commentary on Hegel's most famous work. Beginning with a close analysis of the preface, where Hegel himself addresses the book's difficulty and explains his tortured language in terms of what he calls the "speculative proposition", Reid demonstrates how every form of consciousness discussed in The Phenomenology involves and reveals itself as a form of language. Elucidating Hegel's speculative proposition, which consists of the reversal of the roles of the subject and predicate in such a way that the copula of the proposition becomes the lively arena of dialogical ambiguity and hermeneutical openness, this book offers new onto-grammatical readings of every chapter of The Phenomenology. Not only does this bring a new understanding to Hegel's foundational text, but the linguistic approach further allows Reid to unpack its complexity by relating it to contemporary contexts that share the same language structures that we discover in Hegel. Amongst many others, this includes Hegel's account of sense-certainty and the critique of the immediacy of consumer culture today"--
An incisive account of modern Spain, from the death of Franco to the Catalan referendum and beyond Spain's transition to democracy after Franco's long dictatorship was widely hailed as a success, ushering in three decades of unprecedented progress and prosperity. Yet over the past decade its political consensus has been under severe strain. A stable two-party system has splintered, with disruptive new parties on the far left and far right. No government has had a majority since 2015. Michael Reid overturns the stereotypical view of Spain as a country haunted by its Francoist past. From Catalan separatism and the indignados movement to the Spanish economy's overdependence on tourism and small business, Spain's challenges can often seem unique. But Reid is careful to emphasize the many pressures it faces in common with its European neighbors-such as austerity, populism, and increasing polarization. The result is a penetrating yet rounded portrait of a vibrant country-one that is more often visited than understood.

"The promise of artificial intelligence is automated decision-making at scale, but that means it also automates risk at scale. Are you prepared for that risk? Already, many companies have suffered real damage when their algorithms led to discriminatory, privacy-invading, and even deadly outcomes. Self-driving cars have hit pedestrians; HR algorithms have precluded women from job searches; mortgage systems have denied loans to qualified minorities. And often the companies who deployed the AI couldn't explain why the black box made the decision it did. In this environment, AI ethics isn't merely an academic curiosity, it's a business necessity. In Ethical Machines, Reid Blackman gives you all you need to understand AI ethics as a risk management challenge, then to build, procure, and deploy AI in an ethically (and thus reputationally, regulatory, and legally) safe way, and do it at scale. And don't worry, we're here to get work done, not to ponder deep and existential questions about ethics and technology. Blackman's clear and accessible writing helps make a complex and often misunderstood concept like ethics easy to grasp. You will understand ethical concepts while barely knowing you are taking them on. More importantly, Blackman makes ethics actionable. He tackles the big three ethical risks with AI-bias, explainability, and privacy-and tells you what to do (and what not to do) to mitigate ethical risks. With practical approaches to everything from how to write a strong statement of AI ethics principles to how to create teams that effectively evaluate ethical risks, Ethical Machines is the one guide you need to ensure you're using utterly unbiased, totally transparent, and remarkably respectful artificial intelligence"--

"A moving and frank memoir about living with a disability after a tragic accident. Melanie Reid was fifty-two years old when she fell from her horse, breaking her neck and fracturing her lower back. In an instant, her life changed forever. Paralyzed from the chest down, Melanie spent nearly one year in the hospital working toward gaining as much movement in her body as possible, and learning to navigate her way through a world that had previously been invisible to her. As a journalist, she had always turned to words. As a quadrapalegic person, her mind was still working: she could speak, record her voice, and use a laptop with one finger. Writing would be her lifeline. Melanie writes about disability, recovery, trauma, and relationships with both a generous spirit, frank honesty, and an irreverent sense of humor. Above all, she offers an authentic message of hope. The World I Fell Into reminds us to practice gratitude for what we have, right now, for the world can change in a moment's notice."--
