Russia, China and India and the Israel–Palestine Conflict
In: Holy land studies: a multidisciplinary journal, Band 12, Heft 1, S. 9-24

Outside the Middle East, the future of Israel/Palestine is most often discussed in terms of US foreign policy, where the issue has also acquired religious overtones. This article examines the policies of three nuclear powers – Russia, China and India – on this issue. The analysis takes into account these countries' policies with respect to the entire region, including Iran, in which Russia and the two Asian giants have significant interests. While the three nuclear powers have close contacts with Israel and its military, they opposed Israel's position at the historic UN vote held on 29 November 2012.

Judaism: The Search for Peace in the Holy Land

Judaism is often invoked as an obstacle to the resolution of the conflict in the Holy Land. While Israeli nationalists have made ample use of Judaic concepts, the founding fathers of Zionism and most of their followers have been estranged from religion. This paper analyses the role of different trends in Judaism in their relation to Zionism and to political applications of religion to sacralise the conflict in Palestine-Israel. While the relatively recent National Judaism has become the standard-bearer of Zionism and has provided the most intransigent settlers, the millennia-old Rabbinic Judaism offers traditional tools and approaches to reach a peaceful accommodation.
Language in Nationalism: Modern Hebrew in the Zionist Project
In: Holy land studies: a multidisciplinary journal, Band 9, Heft 2, S. 129-145
ISSN: 1750-0125
This article examines the history of Israel's lingua franca as a constituent of the Zionist project. Based largely on recent scholarship, this work sheds light on the role of language in the educational and political efforts to create a New Hebrew Man who, in contradistinction to the European Jew, was to live 'as a free man' in his own land. Reflecting Jewish experience in the Russian Empire, these efforts alienated traditional, particularly non-Ashkenazi Jews. The article addresses the question of the uniqueness of the modern Israeli vernacular that contributes to the historical legitimacy of Zionism and the state of Israel.
