"The Australian National University's Strategic & Defence Studies Centre (SDSC) is Australia's premier university-based strategic studies think tank. Fifty years after the Centre was founded in 1966, SDSC celebrated its continued research, publications, teaching and government advisory role with a two-day conference entitled 'New Directions in Strategic Thinking 2.0'. The event saw the podium graced by many of the world's premier thinkers in the strategic studies field. "This paper studies dynamic labor demand for private and state-controlled manufacturing plants in China. A goal of the paper is to characterize adjustment costs for these plants. As our sample includes private and state-controlled plants, our analysis uncovers differences in both objectives and adjustment costs across these types of plants. We find evidence of both quadratic and firing costs at the plant level. Costs of adjusting hours are small and higher for private compared to state-controlled plants. The private plants operate with lower quadratic adjustment costs. The higher quadratic adjustment costs of the state-controlled plants may reflect their internalization of social costs of employment adjustment. State-controlled plants appear to be maximizing the discounted present value of profits without a soft-budget constraint. "This paper studies capital adjustment at the establishment level. Our goal is to characterize capital adjustment costs, which are important for understanding both the dynamics of aggregate investment and the impact of various policies on capital accu- mulation. Our estimation strategy searches for parameters that minimize ex post errors in an Euler equation. This strategy is quite common in models for which adjustment occurs in each period. Here, we extend that logic to the estimation of parameters of dynamic optimization problems in which non-convexities lead to extended periods of investment inactivity. In doing so, we create a method to take into account censored observations stemming from intermittent investment. This methodology allows us to take the structural model directly to the data, avoiding time-consuming simulation- based methods. To study the effectiveness of this methodology, we first undertake several Monte Carlo exercises using data generated by the structural model. This volume presents recent consumer research across both positivist and interpretivist methods, focusing on topics with considerable current interest. These topics include organic food consumption, luxury goods consumption by Chinese consumers, country of manufacture effects on product quality perceptions, and the nature and effects of cool consumption. The perspectives embraced include managerial strategies, motivational mechanisms, social influences, and product and brand evaluations. Approximately half of the papers in the present volume were selected from those accepted for the 5th Annual Consumer Culture Theory Conference held at the University of Wisconsin in June of 2010. Together this latter set of interpretive papers presenting cutting edge interpretive consumer research. They also add to the richness of the topics covered in the volume, including chapters emphasizing brands, fashions, blogs, service receipt, and consumption experiences. They also add to the methodological scope of the volume, including uses of ethnography, autoethnography, netnography, and discourse analysis. Altogether the volume is a good reflection of what is happening in the field of consumer research.

"This paper studies the effects of monetary policy rules in a monetary union. The focus of the analysis is on the interaction between the fiscal policy of member countries (regions) and the central monetary authority. When capital markets are integrated, the fiscal policy of one country will influence equilibrium wages and interest rates. Thus there are fiscal spillovers within a federation. The magnitude and direction of these spillovers, in particular the presence of a crowding out effect, can be influenced by the choice of monetary policy rules. We find that there does not exist a monetary policy rule which completely insulates agents in one region from fiscal policy in another.
