ABSTRACTWidespread trade liberalization and economic integration characterize the current era of globalization. While this approach has resulted in significant job creation, improved living standards, and a wider variety of cheaper consumer goods and services, opponents question if globalization's benefits outweigh the dislocations and downsides that it causes. Protestors are intent on stalling or rolling back globalization's progression and our review of the history of globalization reveals that a backlash is not without precedent. The article carefully examines the myth and reality of these two opposing positions on four key areas of the globalization debate: jobs; inequality and poverty; national sovereignty and cultural diversity; and the natural environment. This information is then utilized to derive a broad set of feasible policy recommendations that could help bring about a more sustainable form of globalization.

This article reports on the effects of different groupprocesses on team performance, using a simulation as experimental laboratory. In contrast to prior research that attempted to validate terminal results of gaming experiences, this study is concerned with appraising what transpires throughout the course ofplay. Only such aformative evaluation can test whether or not appropriate behaviors are rewarded and reinforced and lead to successful group performance. A taxonomy of six different decision-making and leadership styles is developed through the use of multiple research methods. Cohesion was found to be a significant factor in explaining high performance. It is proposed that high-performance teams develop as a highly cohesive group with high-performance norms.

Consistent with traditional internationalization theory, we argue that, when a firm chooses franchising to achieve market penetration, market propinquity/similarity matters. Using a modified gravity model, we examine six country characteristics believed to enhance the flow of franchise activity among 39 nations. Our findings support the notion that market propinquity facilitates the flow of franchises between nations. Franchise expansion is greatest when the home and host nations are similar in terms of geography, culture, media availability, and political risk. The management implications of these findings are discussed in detail.
