Uses an unusually detailed set of diaries for the period 1937-1942 to examine the ways in which migration from Londonderry to London influenced the place association and cultural identity of a young Protestant Northern Irish woman. Analysis focuses on three main themes: the experience of migration and adjustment to life in London; the construction of a new life world in London; and the impact of migration on identity with Northern Ireland. Particular emphasis is placed on the contested nature of identity and the ways in which identity was mediated through everyday activities. (Original abstract - amended)
