Abstract
Based on ethnography in a South Asian ethnic enclave and in-depth interviews with South Asian immigrant women, including single mothers working in the enclave, we explore the becoming and being of South Asian single motherhood. We specifically inquire how the becoming of single mothers affects the work–family lives of the mothers in an enclave economy. We show that the interplays of structural forces like immigration laws, racialized model-minority discourses, gendered ideologies of South Asian motherhood, and underlying patriarchy of the enclave economy create what we call "uneven paradoxes" for South Asian single mothers that further marginalize them. We further suggest that the single mothers challenge the paradoxes that mire their lives by striking up "patriarchal bargains" to find resources for themselves and their children and thus find agency within their constraining circumstances.

Although women's representation among international migrants in many countries has risen over the last 100 years, we know far less about gender gaps in the labor force participation of immigrants across a wide span of host societies. Prior studies have established that immigrant women are doubly disadvantaged in terms of labor market outcomes in the U.S., Canada, and Israel. These studies suggest an intriguing question: Are there gender gaps in immigrant labor force participation across destinations countries? In this paper, we investigate the extent to which the double disadvantage exists for immigrant women in a variety of host countries. We also examine how marriage moderates this double disadvantage. For the U.S., although we find that immigrant women have had the lowest labor force participation rates compared to natives and immigrant men since 1960, marital status is an important stratifying attribute that helps explain nativity differences. Extending the analysis to eight other countries reveals strong gender differences in labor force participation and shows how marriage differentiates immigrant women's labor force entry more so than men's.

This article builds on prior studies that document how legal status stratifies society, specifically in outcomes related to international migration. Here, we study such outcomes in Bangladesh, a low-lying nation that has experienced dramatic environmental changes in recent decades and high rates of out-migration. We do event history analyses of a new and unique dataset that includes information from approximately eighteen hundred households in nine villages to investigate whether and how legal status differentiates out-migration from Bangladesh. We find substantial variation in legal status among the women and men who make an initial international trip and that unauthorized migration affects other labor market and economic outcomes: it reduces the number of hours that migrants work in destination countries, lowers the odds that migrants pay taxes or open a bank account, and increases the odds that migrants use social contacts to find jobs.
