The pronounced housing-market and labour-market changes which have intensified in recent decades have had a particularly severe impact upon the social housing sector. In this paper it is argued that within this tenure, social housing estates have experienced a progressive dislocation from the mainstream in economic and social terms. A generic model of Estate Development Trusts is presented which is an attempt to redress not only the balance of labour-market opportunities by targeting such issues as education, training, and (un)employment, but is equally directed at related aspects such as the housing-management, social, and health functions at the estate level. The primary purpose of the model is to provide a framework which highlights the attributes which ought to be considered when seeking to bring about the effective and holistic regeneration of social housing estates.

Both local authorities and central government have responded to the pressures affecting the role of the council sector in the British housing system by attempting to develop new strategies aimed at management and maintenance. Assesses the stimuli which have led to the creation of one such initiative, Estate Action (EA). (Abstract amended)

This work investigates the relationships among Psychology, defined as an institution of knowledge & practices, Politics, conceived as the arena where symbolic & realistic fights occur in order to achieve power & knowledge, & Human Rights, delimited as the socially formed understanding about "human nature." A set of results from several studies carried out by our research group is analyzed. Specifically discussed are the relationships between psychology lecturers' theories & practices concerning homosexuality & discrimination against it. The results show the existence of a social norm that predisposes psychology lecturers against explicit prejudicial attitudes, but that psychological theory & practice reinforce discriminatory situations. The labour market hiring function is estimated in the 104 areas of Training and Enterprise Councils (TECs) and Local Enterprise Companies (LECs) that cover Britain. The model gives good overall fit with a general pattern evidencing constant returns to scale between unemployment and vacancies. Important variations occur between local TEC/LEC areas, particularly for islands, the City of London, suburban commuter areas, and coalfields or other areas suffering steep rises in redundancies. The estimates suggest that there is a linear aggregation between the local and national level. It is also concluded that the present boundaries of TEC/LEC areas should be reviewed, particularly in metropolitan areas, or that government contracts should give a strong emphasis to TECs or LECs working more closely together in these areas.

In response to the 2013 Update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics, the Future Circular Collider (FCC) study was launched, as an international collaboration hosted by CERN. This study covers a highest-luminosity high-energy lepton collider (FCC-ee) and an energy-frontier hadron collider (FCC-hh), which could, successively, be installed in the same 100 km tunnel. The scientific capabilities of the integrated FCC programme would serve the worldwide community throughout the 21st century. The FCC study also investigates an LHC energy upgrade, using FCC-hh technology. This document constitutes the second volume of the FCC Conceptual Design Report, devoted to the electron-positron collider FCC-ee. After summarizing the physics discovery opportunities, it presents the accelerator design, performance reach, a staged operation scenario, the underlying technologies, civil engineering, technical infrastructure, and an implementation plan. FCC-ee can be built with today's technology. Most of the FCC-ee infrastructure could be reused for FCC-hh. Combining concepts from past and present lepton colliders and adding a few novel elements, the FCC-ee design promises outstandingly high luminosity. This will make the FCC-ee a unique precision instrument to study the heaviest known particles (Z, W and H bosons and the top quark), offering great direct and indirect sensitivity to new physics. ; European Union [654305, 764879, 730871, 777563]; FP7 [312453] ; Open access article ; This item from the UA Faculty Publications collection is made available by the University of Arizona with support from the University of Arizona Libraries.
