This article belongs to the Special Issue Frontiers in Gold Chemistry. ; The reaction of the ligand Et4todit (4,5,6,7-Tetrathiocino-[1,2-b:3,4-b']-diimidazolyl-1,3,8,10-tetraethyl-2,9-dithione) with gold complexes leads to the dinuclear gold(I) complexes [{Au(C6F5)}2(Et4todit)] and [Au(Et4todit)]2(OTf)2, which do not contain any gold-gold interactions, or to the gold(III) derivative [{Au(C6F5)3}2(Et4todit)]. It is necessary to explore new treatment alternatives because antifungals are not approved for use on small ruminant animals in the European Union. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) has been shown to be effective for the treatment of dermatophytosis in humans. It is based on the application of a photosensitizer such as methylene blue (MB) that is activated by visible light to generate reactive oxygen species that are cytotoxic to cells. The use of daylight to perform aPDT (aDL-PDT) avoids the requirement of specific equipment because it uses sunlight to activate the photosensitizer. The aim of our study is to determine the efficacy of aDL-PDT using a 1% MB solution to treat dermatophytosis caused by A. vanbreuseghemii in ewes. Two different topical protocols (1% MB solution spray applications once or twice a week) were assayed in two groups of five infected animals. Twenty-five infected sheep were untreated. All the sheep were exposed to sunlight every day for an approximate duration of 10 h for a total of four weeks. At the end of the study, all the animals treated with aDL-PDT showed the same clinical response to both protocols. In contrast, the animals exposed only to sunlight required an additional two to four weeks before their infections resolved. Conclusion: aDL-PDT with 1% MB solution demonstrates efficacy, safety and efficiency in the treatment of dermatophytosis in sheep.

Purpose– The purpose of this paper is to analyze whether the influence of manufacturing flexibility on firms' exploration/exploitation differs between firms that possess Certified Quality Management Systems (CQMS) and firms that do not.Design/methodology/approach– The authors analyze a sample of 231 Spanish manufacturing firms, 131 of which had received some form of Quality Certification. The data were collected through a structured telephone questionnaire addressed to company CEOs. The relationships are modelled using regression equations, including interaction terms, in order to test for the existence of a moderating effect.Findings– The results show that certified companies exploit their own abilities, whereas uncertified firms tend to explore new knowledge. The authors also justify the importance of manufacturing flexibility for both options, exploration and exploitation.Research limitations/implications– The limitations of this research include the fact that the authors study a variety of forms of certification, not only ISO, and the fact that all companies belong to the same country.Practical implications– This study contributes to developing empirical knowledge of the benefits of CQMS in the firm.Originality/value– The paper develops a new model to improve manufacturing flexibility and Quality Management.
