The article discusses the possibilities, as well as the limitations of the analysis of the elderly households material situation (single-person households aged 65+ and double with at least one person aged 65+) in selected countries of Central and Eastern Europe: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary - belonging to the EU in 2004 as well as Bulgaria and Romania - in the EU since 2007. The study uses selected results of the analysis made on the basis of the EU-SILC (European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions). Significant differences in the financial situation of elderly households in different countries of Central and Eastern Europe were observed on the basis of the data analysis on housing facilities in some material good as well as subjective assessment of financial situation of the households.

The book collects the most contemporary issues related to the process of ageing of societies in Central and Eastern Europe. The multiplicity of topics presented with the variety of theoretical and methodological approaches means that although it is a publication by many authors, it is a consistent monographic study, showing the development of sociology of ageing as a scientific discipline in selected countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The aim of the book is to call the attention of the reader and emphasize that the challenges of population ageing in this part of Europe are important aspects of sociology is particularly valuable. These challenges require not only recognition and resolution through application of appropriate research approaches, but also education of various actors (including policy makers) for being prepared for both diagnosing the phenomena and taking action in practice

Perek‐Białas J, Turek K. Organisation‐level policy towards older workers in PolandThis article presents the results of studies on organisation‐level strategies towards older workers in Poland. The analyses were based on a national and representative sample survey of 1,037 companies (public and private sectors) – the first of its kind in Poland. The question of the survey was: How do Polish employers deal with an ageing workforce and how can management tap into their potential through various measures? The analyses revealed three different strategies: (i) improvement of productivity – trying to improve the skills and competencies of older workers, increase their effective use of and adjustment to the workplace, plan individual career moves and avoid work burn‐out; (ii) the pushing out of older workers – attempting to rid the workplace of older workers as quickly as possible; (iii) accommodation and reduction of labour costs – slowly preparing senior workers for retirement and creating conditions that would meet their actual needs.

Drawing on the debates regarding work–family reconciliation in later life, we examine the extent to which the labor market position of grandmothers and nongrandmothers can be explained by their varied family situations. The data for this study comes from the Generations and Gender Survey for Poland and includes 5,999 women aged 45+ years. We use multinominal logistic regression models to explore the link between different family situations and labor market withdrawal into unemployment, sick/disability leave, and retirement. Our results indicate that neither caring for older parents nor living with children has significant effects on women's labor activity. However, living with a disabled person reduces the chances for women's employment significantly. In addition, women who have grandchildren have lower chances for being employed as compared with those without grandchildren. We discuss these findings in relation to work–family balance policies and research.

Résumé Le présent article traite du « vieillissement actif » en tant que concept politique et de sa signification au sein de différentes cultures. Nous nous penchons ici sur la République tchèque et la Pologne, deux anciens pays communistes qui ont connu une transition économique et politique dans les années 1990 et ont adhéré à l'Union européenne en 2004. Ces pays ont tous deux une démographie similaire, à savoir une population vieillissante, mais ils diffèrent assez largement par leur vision du vieillissement actif comme question d'action publique. La méthode employée est une méta-analyse d'entretiens et de consultations avec des spécialistes. Les résultats montrent qu'il n'y a pas en Pologne de politique globale relative à la question du vieillissement actif et, en République tchèque, pas de vision systémique générale fondée sur les principes du vieillissement actif. Le débat sur l'activité des seniors se focalise largement sur l'emploi et le marché de travail, délaissant en grande partie la question des services sociaux, des soins à la personne ou encore, tout simplement, des loisirs. Le manque de mécanismes institutionnels, les obstacles budgétaires, les perceptions socioculturelles discriminatoires ou encore la conjoncture économique défavorable constituent autant de barrières à la mise en place de stratégies de vieillissement actif pour la période étudiée. Toutefois, il apparaît que le problème est désormais connu, et que les modifications de la démographie ainsi que l'attitude des seniors pourront, à l'avenir, peser sur un débat plus large consacré au vieillissement actif.

Population ageing is one of the most impactful phenomena in contemporary Western societies. COVID-19 put great pressure on worldwide public health and long-term care (LTC) systems, demanding substantial investments in search of new sustainability. This study analyses the opinions of European experts on the positive and negative aspects of the impact of COVID-19 on their national LTC systems to identify valuable lessons and innovative policies for European LTC strategy after this recent health emergency. A content analysis was performed on interviews with and focus groups of experts and stakeholders from selected countries. The findings argue for an innovative, open and comprehensive LTC model.

Populations around the globe are ageing rapidly. This demographic shift affects families, market structures and social provisions. This timely volume, part of the Ageing and the Lifecourse series, argues that the lifecourse perspective helps us understand the causes and effects of population ageing. The lifecourse perspective suggests that individuals' experiences at an early age can influence their decisions and behaviour at a later age. This much-needed volume combines insights from different disciplines and real-life experiences to describe the theories and practices behind this idea. It therefore caters to the needs of scholars, practitioners and policy makers in a range of areas including sociology and political science

Abstract
Bringing together 150+ scholars and practitioners from 50+ countries, and funded by the European Commission, COST Action LeverAge (https://www.cost.eu/actions/CA22120/) is the first network-building project of its kind in the work and organizational psychology and human resource management (WOP/HRM) aspects of work and aging. Focused on the aging workforce, the Action aims to foster interdisciplinary and multinational scientific excellence and the translation of science to practical and societal impact across 4 years. Based on a research synthesis, we identify five broad research directions for work and aging science including work and organizational practices for a multi-age workforce, successful aging at work, the integration of age-diverse workers and knowledge transfer, aging and technology at work, and career development in later life and retirement. We provide key research questions to guide scientific inquiry along these five research directions alongside best practice recommendations to expand scholarly impact in WOP/HRM.
