A cross-sectional household survey was conducted in a randomized sample of 575 households of the city of Porto Alegre, Brazil, providing a weighted N of 950 adolescents, their ages ranging from 10 to 18. Subjects were submitted to individualized interviewing, using a structured instrument, about their normal and abusive patterns of alcohol drinking. Alcohol use is frequent (71%), with no sex differences. Overall, males reported more problems with drinking than females (36.8% vs. 28.9%), its prevalence increasing in the older subjects. Seventy percent of the problems (both sexes) were physical complaints. Normal, excessive, and intoxicating levels of use were recorded, with higher patterns reported by males. Lifetime intoxications were common (more than 50%) after the age of 17, and more frequently reported by males. The implications for prevention programs and strategies to cope with adolescent alcohol abuse are discussed.

The authors describe the preliminary data from a research project to assess risk behaviors for HIV transmission among drug abusers in the south of Brazil, with particular emphasis on IDUs. Two questionnaires developed by U.S. researchers (the risk for AIDS behavior inventory {RAB} and the risk behavior assessment [RBAJ] were translated and adapted to be used as assessment tools for the first 61 cases of the project. The preliminary findings are reported, as well as implications for the development of future interventions to deal with the spread of HIV in Brazil.

No artigo foram analisados a alcoolemia e comportamentos de risco para acidentes de trânsito em jovens antes e depois da implementação de lei proibindo o consumo de bebidas alcoólicas em postos de gasolina. Em Porto Alegre (RS), os jovens costumam sair à noite e dirigir até lojas de conveniência de postos de gasolina para comprar e consumir bebidas alcoólicas nos estacionamentos dentro dos postos. Os dados foram obtidos de questionários autoaplicáveis e bafômetro em duas coletas transversais realizadas com jovens, abordados em maio e julho de 2006 com amostragem intencional (n=62 e n=50, respectivamente). Não houve diferença signifi cativa entre os grupos entrevistados. Alcoolemia >0,06% foi encontrada em 35,5% e 40% dos indivíduos antes e depois da lei, respectivamente (p=0,62). Os resultados apontam o uso pesado de álcool em ambos os grupos, inalterado pela implementação da lei. ; The paper assesses blood alcohol concentration and risk behaviors for traffi c accidents before and after the implementation of a law which prohibits the use of alcoholic beverages on city gas stations. In Porto Alegre, Southern Brazil, young people go out at night and drive to gas station convenience stores to buy alcoholic beverages which are consumed on the premises of parking lots in gas stations. Data were obtained from self-administered questionnaires and breath analyzers in two cross-sectional collections with purposive samples of youngsters in May and July 2006 (n=62, and n=50, respectively). There were no signifi cant differences between the groups before and after the city law was passed. Blood alcohol concentration greater than 0.06% was found in 35.5% of pre-law group and 40% of post-law group (p=0.62). Results point out heavy alcohol use in both groups, which did not change after the law was passed.

This paper reports the participant observation of a Brazilian psychologist and a Brazilian psychiatrist during a 1-month period in two therapeutic communities (TCs) for drug-using offenders. A description of the activities undertaken by the prisoners who are serving their sentences at the Multi-Purpose Criminal Justice Facility in Wilmington, Del., is complemented with a theoretical understanding of the process. Clinical and developmental psychological approaches are used to explain the functioning of TCs when applied to a correctional environment. The theory of scripts and the use of metacommunication as a therapeutic tool are used in the explanation of these therapeutic procedures.

Objective: In an attempt to reduce high levels of traffic crashes, a new legislation was approved in Brazil in 2008. This study aimed to assess behavioral change among drivers who had drunk at alcohol outlets (AO) after implementation of the law. Method: A three-stage probability sampling survey was conducted in Porto Alegre, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Individuals seen leaving AOs after drinking were approached (n=3,018). Selected drivers (n=683) answered a structured interview, were breathalyzed, and had saliva specimens collected for drug screening. Results: Overall, 60.3% (SE 4.5) of drivers reported they did not change their behavior. Among those who reported behavioral changes, most reported drinking less as their main strategy toward safer driving behavior. Variables independently associated with behavior change included having drunk at a high outlet density area (odds ratio [OR] 1.7 [1.1-2.8]) and having a favorable opinion about the law (OR 4.3 [2.1-8.9]). Conclusions: Our findings suggest that awareness of the law has not been enough to promote behavioral change. As most drivers had a favorable opinion of the law and this variable was found to be the strongest predictor of behavior change, efforts to better integrate education and enforcement seem to be pivotal and might be well received by the population.

Background: Substance Use Disorders are often associated with significant levels of domestic and external violence registered among abusers. This investigation aimed to evaluate the Domestic Violence Involvement (DVI) and related gender differences among Crack Cocaine Users in Brazil. Methods: For this purpose, a secondary data analysis of a multicenter cross-sectional study involving 780 Crack Cocaine Users from 6 Brazilian capitals was performed. Results: The prevalence of DVI among abusers was not different between males and females. Crack-cocaine users with DVI versus without DVI experienced significantly more aggressions and beatings as victims throughout their life (54.7% vs. 40.5%), showed greater difficulty in controlling the impulse to assault or hurt someone throughout their life (65% vs. 36.4%), higher number of physical aggressions (25.9% vs. 11.6%), car theft (27.3% vs. 16.9%), violent crimes (12.9% vs. 6.2%). Men also reported a higher prevalence of detentions/arrests (61%) than women, while women were more frequently charged over their parental powers than men. Conclusions: Our findings suggested that DVI in Crack-Cocaine users may be a potential predictor of social violence in general with no significant differences between males and females. Legal punishments remain related to the cultural role assigned to each gender with men being more likely to be detained in their lives and women being reported more for parental neglect.

Ecstasy and LSD use is widespread in large Brazilian cities, but there is limited information on their use among young, middle-class, club goers in Brazil. We conducted standardized face-to-face interviews with 200 male and female ecstasy and/or LSD users, focusing on drug use and sexual history, current risk behaviors, and psychiatric symptomatology. Participants with early sexual debut (before 14) were more likely to report lifetime use of marijuana and powder and crack cocaine than those with later sexual initiation. Early sexual debut was associated with past year sexual risk behaviors, including having sex while high (Prevalence Ratio (PR)=1.3), having two or more sex partners (PR=1.3), as well as history of sexual abuse (PR=13.6). Depression and anxiety scores were similar by age of sexual initiation. The implications of these findings are discussed.
