Abstract Objective: To determine the prevalence and socio-behavioural risk factors for dental caries among children at selected LGAs in Lagos State. Material and Methods: This was a descriptive study of 592 school children in four Local Government Areas of Lagos, Nigeria. The presence of caries was recorded using the World Health Organization criteria. Descriptive statistics were reported for analysis of comparative DMFT and SiC scores in relation to age, gender, and other socio-demographic variables. Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the differential impact of the variables on the probability of being in the high caries prevalence group. Results: The prevalence of dental caries was 16.0% with mean dmft for age 6 being 1.3 ± 1.57 while the mean DMFT for age 12 was 0.15 ± 0.67. The mean Sic for age 6 was 1.5 ± 0.53 while the mean SiC for age 12 was 1.09 ± 0.29. The mean SiC values was significantly higher in the primary and permanent dentition among those who had never visited the dentist, female students, those who don't use fluoridated toothpaste and those who eat sweets and candy several times a day. After logistic regression analysis, those with no previous dental visit (OR=3.05; CI: 1.72-4.67) and females (OR=1.55; CI: 1.16-1.62) still had significantly higher SiC Values. Conclusion: The prevalence of caries was low in the study population. Being female, non-use of fluoride-containing toothpaste and not visiting the dentist were significant predictors of dental caries among children attending private schools.

Introduction: The advent of cephalometric analysis has aided orthodontic diagnostic procedures, while the Tweed's facial triangle which is a type of cephalometric analysis has complemented routine orthodontic treatment planning. This aim of this study was to evaluate Tweed's facial triangle among a selected Nigerian population with normal occlusion. Materials & Method: A sample of 100 subjects, selected by multistage sampling from three schools in Ikeja local government, Lagos State had lateral cephalometric radiographs taken. The final sample analysis of the radiographs was 84. The error of the cephalometric method was assessed using the intra-class correlation co-efficient. The Tweed's facial triangle was analyzed on the cephalometric radiographs and comparison between this Nigerian population and Tweed's Caucasian cohort was carried out. Result: Out of the 84 subjects, 41(48.8%) were males and 43(51.2%) females. This study reported mean values of 23.26° ± 4.78° for FMA, 54.08° ± 5.11° for FMIA and 103.47° ± 6.26° for IMPA. Females had higher FMIA and IMPA values compared to males which was statistically significant for FMIA. The FMA was higher in males with a statistically significant difference between genders. The results suggest increased proclination of lower incisors in this Nigerian population compared to Tweed's Caucasian population. Conclusion: The mean values for Tweed's facial triangle in this Nigerian population were significantly different from that obtained by Tweed. Orthodontists should aim at achieving these values when analyzing cephalometric radiographs using Tweed's facial triangle in Nigerians. This will further aid proper diagnosis, treatment planning with or without extractions and planning of retention after orthodontic treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Malnutrition in children is one of the most prevalent global health challenges, and malnourished children have a higher risk of death from childhood diseases. Early childhood caries (ECC) is the most common chronic disease of childhood. Complications from ECC such as pain, loss of tooth/teeth, and infection can undermine a child's nutrition and growth. AIM: This study aims to evaluate the severity of decay, missing, and filled tooth (dmft) by nutritional status using the z scores of the anthropometric measurements: height for age (HFA), weight for age (WFA), weight for height (WFH), and body mass index for age (BMIA) among children with ECC in Nigeria. STUDY DESIGN: This is a cross-sectional study conducted in 5 local government areas (LGAs) in Lagos State, Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique was used. RESULTS: A total of 273 cases of ECC were included in the analyses (mean age 4.19 ± 0.96 y). Overall, the mean dmft was 3.04 ± 2.28, and most (96%) were accounted for by untreated decay. The distribution of dmft within the different z score categories of BMIA (+3 = obese) showed the highest dmft scores among the combined severely wasted and wasted groups, lowest among children with normal z scores, and intermediate in the overweight and obese groups. There was a significant negative correlation between BMIA z score, WFH z score, and dmft (r = −0.181, P < 0.05 and r = −0.143, P < 0.05, respectively). However, the correlations between HFA z score, WFA z score, and dmft were positive but not significant (r = 0.048, P = 0.44 and r = 0.022, P = 0.77, respectively). CONCLUSION: Our study showed an increased severity of dental caries among severely wasted or wasted children with ECC compared to those of normal or overweight.
