In this article we explore the ways in which people with genital herpes attending the Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) clinic govern their `contagious bodies'. The discussion draws on the Foucauldian concept of governmentality, and uses Foucault's idea of ethics as a framework to identify the technologies of the self by which individuals with genital herpes govern their own thoughts and behaviours in relation to the contagiousness of the condition. Implications for practice and other ways of thinking about what happens in the STI clinic context are suggested.

Introduction: Military service affects the health and well-being of both Veterans and their family members, with increasing recognition of the need for support to be provided to Veterans' families. In 2017 the Australian Department of Veterans' Affairs commissioned a rapid review of the literature to explore whether the delivery of support services to families of contemporary Veterans results in better outcomes for the Veteran. Methods: A systematic search of the peer-reviewed literature resulted in the extraction of 30 articles, reduced to 29 following quality assessment. We then produced a narrative synthesis of the articles. Results: All of the studies were undertaken in the United States (US). The majority ( n = 20) focused on couples/family therapy, in particular, to address post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in Veterans. Discussion: The studies overall reported significant psychological and relational benefit for Veterans when families are supported. However, the diversity of approaches suggests that currently, no one approach suits all family situations. More work is needed to develop interventions that address the broader psychosocial needs of families, such as work commitments and childcare needs, and to evaluate how these might benefit Veterans.

Background: Employment is an important social determinant of health and is associated with positive health outcomes. However, individuals who have been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD) are significantly underrepresented in the workforce. Whilst there is an array of evidence based therapeutic interventions, there remains a gap in knowledge regarding the most effective ways to enhance employment outcomes for people with a diagnosis of BPD. Aim: To explore employment interventions for people with BPD, map the available evidence and identify key concepts and knowledge gaps. Methods: A scoping review was conducted to identify and map the relevant literature. Findings were summarised using a narrative approach. Consultation was provided by a reference group including peer support workers with lived experience of BPD and mental health clinicians. Results: Seven articles met the inclusion criteria, including non-randomised and case study/series designs and a randomised controlled trial protocol, with participant numbers generally low. All programmes combined a psychotherapeutic component with work related goals; however, there were notable differences in relation to the conceptual/theoretical approach of the psychotherapeutic component and delivery of the work-related components. Barriers and enablers to programme participation and success are explored. Conclusions: This review provides important insights into the characteristics of vocational rehabilitation interventions for people diagnosed with BPD. The findings will inform the co-production of approaches to support people with BPD to engage in employment.

This article describes how older people's mental health is governed through policy discourse by examining Australian Commonwealth and South Australian State government policy documents, and commentaries from professional groups, advocacy groups and non-governmental organisations. Documents published between 2009 and 2014 were analysed using a governmentality approach, informed by Foucault. Discourses of 'risk', 'ageing as decline/dependence' and 'healthy ageing' were identified. Through these discourses, different neo-liberal governmental strategies are applied to 'target' groups according to varying risk judgements. Three policy approaches were identified where older people are (1) absent from policy, (2) governed as responsible, active citizens or (3) governed as passive recipients of health care. This fragmented policy response to older people's mental health reflects fragmentation in the Australian policy environment. It constructs an ambiguous place for older people within neo-liberal governmental rationality, with significant effects on the health system, older people and their carers.
