This book is a study of compassion as a global project from Biafra to Live Aid. Kevin O'Sullivan explains how and why NGOs became the primary conduits of popular concern for the global poor between the late 1960s and the mid-1980s and shows how this shaped the West's relationship with the post-colonial world. Drawing on case studies from Britain, Canada and Ireland, as well as archival material from governments and international organisations, he sheds new light on how the legacies of empire were re-packaged and re-purposed for the post-colonial era, and how a liberal definition of benevolence, rooted in charity, justice, development and rights became the dominant expression of solidarity with the Third World. In doing so, the book provides a unique insight into the social, cultural and ideological foundations of global civil society. It reveals why this period provided such fertile ground for the emergence of NGOs and offers a fresh interpretation of how individuals in the West encountered the outside world.

The rapid expansion of the international humanitarian NGO community in the long 1970s brought with it much soul-searching on how NGOs could move beyond charity and towards genuine solidarity with the Third World. Drawing on evidence from non-governmental organizations in Britain and Ireland, this article examines the role played by the NIEO and the pursuit of global economic and political reform in shaping those debates. It argues for the enduring importance of the liberal economic paradigm in shaping Western attitudes to justice, but concludes that we should pay more attention to the role of the Third World and the Christian churches in shaping the worldview of humanitarian NGOs.

The past decade has seen a very significant cultural shift in how group programs are delivered in prisons and in probation and parole settings in New South Wales, Australia. The agency responsible for custodial and community corrections services, Corrective Services New South Wales (CSNSW) is making its way from a culture of considerable autonomy, where staff largely wrote and ran group programs in the way that seemed best to them, to an organisation where systems exist for accreditation, training, supervision and systematic data collection. The transformation to model agency is not complete, but considerable progress has been made and this is borne out by the preparation and publication of a number of significant papers describing the outcomes of program interventions. This paper appraises the progress so far in the introduction of evidence-based group work and offers some reflections on the challenges faced in moving a large organisation concerned with security and offender supervision towards best practice in group rehabilitative programs.

This monograph focusses on a cohesive group of four government buildings constructed in Adelaide during the 1970s. Designed by different architects, the buildings all feature monolithic, austere forms and broadly similar external concrete finishes, and are often described by casual observers as being Brutalist in style. But are any or all of them truly Brutalist?

This thesis uses the example of sub-Saharan as a framework through which to analyse the evolution of Irish foreign policy between 1955 and 1975. It was a period of considerable change. When Ireland joined the United Nations in 1955 it ended a period of international isolation and allowed the Irish government to re-engage with international affairs and to re-state and re-defme the principles that governed its attitude to foreign policy. In the five years that followed its independent approach, particularly visible in its attitude to the decolonisation process, won it a considerable amount of support from across the political spectrum, and led later analysts to define the period as a kind of ?golden age? in Irish foreign policy. What followed through the emergence of a vocal and increasingly radical group of newly-independent Afro- Asian states served to temper Irish enthusiasm. The involvement of Irish troops in the United Nations peacekeeping force in the Congo between 1960 and 1964 brought about a maturity in the state?s attitudes to international affairs. The deaths of Irish troops brought home the very real sacrifices to be made in the pursuit of Ireland?s principles, and the detrimental effect of the Congo crisis on the United Nations highlighted the limitations to Ireland?s commitment to that organisation in the pursuit of international peace and stability. ; TARA (Trinity?s Access to Research Archive) has a robust takedown policy.
