Social integration in the management of traditional irrigation systems in north-west Mexico ; Imbricación social en el manejo de sistemas de riego tradicionales en el noroeste de México
Summary The objective of the study is to understand the structure underlying the relationships established in the context of the management of irrigation in two cases of traditional irrigation systems in the state of Sonora (Mexico) and to show the extent to which these working relationships are embedded in networks with different social content. The social integration approach was applied using the social media analysis methodology. Empirical evidence showed that in both cases traditional irrigation systems were operated collectively by rural farmers without external support. The findings reveal how, despite the different historical trajectories of rural irrigation communities, both groups converge in forming a dense network of friendships, families and political relatives. Social integration was underpinned at a relational and structural level.
