Current research on multinational corporations (MNCS) is connected with cultural diffusion theory in several social science disciplines. Research on MNCS has failed to achieve the theoretical significance merited by the phenomenon, in large part because of disciplinary & ideological partisanship that characterizes such research. In a self-conscious attempt to render an interdisciplinary & unbiased account of the impacts of the MNCS in host societies, two related hypotheses are developed & discussed: (1) MNCS are effective agents of the diffusion of modern culture, playing a role in contemporary international relations comparable to the roles played by missionaries & invading armies during the colonial era. (2) In particular, the MNCS are active in the diffusion of world standards of belief & behavior, although this activity is usually the unintended, unanticipated outcome of the pursuit of other, manifest corporate goals. 1 Table, 64 References.
