This article argues that the Greek idea of sparagmos (tearing apart) offers an illuminating metaphor to describe creative artists' engagement with antiquity. The violence and fertility innate within sparagmos are particularly appropriate to postcolonial receptions of classical literature, as will be demonstrated by examining Toni Morrison's novel, Sula, and Wole Soyinka's play, The Bacchae of Euripides: A Communion Rite, both published in 1973. While the latter proclaims its debt to antiquity in the title, the former plays a more elusive game by engaging with a number of ancient Greek texts (none explicitly), before going on to defy our classically-infused expectations. Sula's primary classical antecedent is Sophocles' Ajax, but that tragedy is ripped apart and its dismembered remains scattered throughout the novel before being 're-membered' in a form of compositio membrorum (gathering together of limbs). Soyinka's engagement with Greek tragedy is more direct, and the sparagmos is seen not so much in his approach to classical literature as in the action of the play, as well as in his critique of Nigeria's contemporary political scene. Together, these two case-studies demonstrate the potential inherent in the trope of sparagmos as a metaphor for classical reception, particularly in the sphere of postcolonial literature.

The basic challenge to industrial geographers is to construct a general theory of the interrelationships between the behavior of industrial organizations and the dynamic spatial structures of industrial systems. Three conceptual problems associated with this research are examined in terms of the transformation of manufacturing firms from intranational companies to international enterprises. The major conclusions from the discussion are that the interrelationships between the internationalization process and the spatial form of industrial systems must be viewed as the result of the strategic choices made by management; that the initial dependent variable of the transformation process should be an index measure of the financial performance of the firm over time; and that rigorous testing of the hypotheses already formulated by industrial geographers must assume the highest priority. Following a discussion of the three issues, the conceptual design of an experimental research project now in progress is described. The project is an investigation of the strategic responses of a sample of American firms to import competition and economic decline.

Today, the Pacific Basin has become the main focus of global trade and investment, bringing to an end nearly four centuries of primacy by the North Atlantic countries. With its imports from the Pacific Rim growing more rapidly than exports, the US is developing a huge trade deficit with the region (1982: US $ 72 billion; 1984: US $ 110 billion). The scale, sectoral composition, and regional economic impact of recent Canadian direct investment in Western New York are examined. Empirical perspectives on the role of the Canada—United States Free Trade Agreement (FTA) are presented, notably with regard to Western New York's growing absorption of Canadian industrial capital. Data from a postal survey of Canadian investors are described. The results suggest that the FTA has not been a strategic factor in recent investment patterns. Instead, the data reveal an important role for locational and market considerations, few of which pertain to official regulations of bilateral commerce. Some of the empirical results suggest an economic synergy between southern Ontario and Western New York. Specifically, both regions appear to have captured significant commercial benefits from recent cross-border investment. The paper concludes with a brief research agenda for future geographical work on the economic impact of more liberal investment relations between the two countries.

Short-term placements of children with visual impairments in residential schools for the visually impaired are a viable solution to the difficulties these children experience in regular classrooms in their local schools. This article discusses the duration, goals, implementation, and evaluation of these placements, as well as administrative considerations and factors that are critical for their success, and describes the programs at a residential school in Atlantic Canada.

NOMAD (Nadir and Occultation for MArs Discovery) is one of the four instruments on board the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter, scheduled for launch in March 2016. It consists of a suite of three high-resolution spectrometers - SO (Solar Occultation), LNO (Limb, Nadir and Occultation) and UVIS (Ultraviolet and Visible Spectrometer). Based upon the characteristics of the channels and the values of Signal-to-Noise Ratio obtained from radiometric models discussed in (Vandaele et al., 2015a, 2015b; Thomas et al., 2016), the expected performances of the instrument in terms of sensitivity to detection have been investigated. The analysis led to the determination of detection limits for 18 molecules, namely CO, HO, HDO, CH, CH, CH, HCO, CH, SO, HS, HCl, HCN, HO, NH, NO, NO, OCS, O.
