Stages of HIV/AIDS, Marital Status and Perceived Quality Of Life
The evaluation of the stages of HIV/AIDS is not usually considered in most quality of life research, despite the prevalence rate of HIV in Nigeria and the poor attitude of Nigerians towards testing. This study investigates the influence of stages of HIV/AIDS and marital status on perceived quality of life(QoL) among People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) attending Antiretroviral Therapy at the Haematology and Pathology Clinic, State Specialist Hospital, Akure South Local Government Area, Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria. Using a one-way analysis of variance, a cross sectional design and a convenience sampling method, two hundred and ten PLWHA were sampled. A structured questionnaire focusing on socio-demographic profile and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire for HIV-Brief Version (WHOQOL-BREF) instrument was administered to the participants. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and analysis of variance at 0.05 level of significance. Two hypotheses were tested. The result reveals that stages of HIV/AIDS and marital status significantly influenced general quality of life (F(2,210)=5.43, p<.05), (F(3,210)=3.89, p<.05) respectively. The stages of HIV/AIDS and marital status of patients are important for adequate care and the improvement of quality of life of PLWHA.
