What Latin American communication research owes to Brazil: personal account of an intercultural experience ; O que a pesquisa latino-americana de comunicação deve ao Brasil: relato pessoal de uma experiência intercultural
Neste texto, Jesús Martín-Barbero descreve pontos que aproximaram o Brasil de seu pensamento e contribuições brasileiras à pesquisa de comunicação latino-americana. Algumas das dimensões discutidas são: o aporte reflexivo para a compreensão do cenário político-cultural da comunicação, que permitiu pensar como a indústria cultural promoveu uma nova ideia de nação; um entendimento mais complexo, superando a razão dualista, das relações entre o popular e o massivo, que se expressou no país em duas linhas de investigação, a da contra-hegemonia comunicativa e a da competência do sujeito receptor, e também a contribuição das reflexões de autores brasileiros para a discussão dos processos de globalização contemporâneos. ; In this text, Jesús Martín-Barbero describes points that brought Brazil closer to his thought, besides contributions to Latin American communication research. Some of the dimensions discussed are the following: the reflective contribution to understanding the communication political-cultural scenario, which allowed thinking about how the cultural industry promoted a new idea of nation; a more complex understanding, which overcomes dualistic reason, of the relations between the popular and the massive, expressed in the country in two lines of investigation, one related to communicative counterhegemony and the other to the competence of the receiver, and also the contribution of Brazilian authors' reflection to the discussion about contemporary globalization processes.

In this essay, Colombian philosopher and essayist Jesús Martín-Barbero reflects on the transformations his work has gone through, from his initial attention to the question of the relation between media and mediation, and its connection to particular modes of seeing and listening structurally traversed by history and culture, to the issue of memory, history and temporality. Barbero emphasizes here the challenges that the singularity of Colombian reality pose to our colonized forms of doing history and telling the story of Colombian conflict, inviting us to reflect on the particular tasks that the current political and historical situation requires, if a real possibility of redistribution of power and political voice is ever to take place. By expanding Heidegger's reflections on technique and its relation to our contemporary forms of temporality, he invites us to look for potentialities and possibilities of critique and change in the new spaces given to us by "virtual" reality.

The present paper evaluates the diverse career choices of a journalist in three problematic fields: competence and trades, agencies of validation and the dynamics of transformation. The article explores the implications of a qualitative redefinition of a journalist's role -from being a mere journalist-intermediary to a journalist-mediator. The journalist is thus seen as one who assumes the asymmetries as well as the social and cultural inequalities as the basis of his profession while allowing him to be actively involved in the construction of a democratic society. Finally, it is argued that journalists should develop a more critical and inquisitive attitude in the light of their redefined role and the media's increasing use of technology. ; En el presente ensayo se evalúan los oficios del comunicador a la luz de tres ámbitos problemáticos: las competencias y los oficios, las agencias de legitimación y las dinámicas de transformación. Se defiende la tesis de un cambio cualitativo, desde un comunicador-intermediario hacia un comunicador-mediador, que asume como base de su acción las asimetrías y las desigualdades sociales y culturales, al participar como actor en la construcción de una sociedad democrática. Se subraya en este contexto que, frente a las tecnologías incorporadas a los medios de comunicación, el ejercicio del comunicador debe comportar más inquietudes e interrogantes que respuestas. ; No presente ensaio, os escritórios do comunicador são avaliados à luz de três áreas problemáticas: as competências e os ofícios, os órgãos de legitimação e a dinâmica de transformação. Thinking about art separately from the contemporary cultural and communicative transformations that influence the daily lives of most people prevents an understanding of the meaning of their own unease and impasses. The key to these cultural changes lies in a technological mutation that disrupts ways of being together – both at the local and national level, which are still the spaces of politics – by affecting our perceptions of space and time, forms of work, and ways of knowing. The relationship between art and politics, today, passes less through partisan and ideological positions and more through demands for political visibility and sociocultural recognition.

Paradigmas de comunicación: un mapa con memoria latinoamericana
What conception of social features and what models of communication allow us to insert the research in the processes of transformation of the political and cultural life of our countries today? The answer to this question is currently darker and more complex, since now we do not rely on the safeguards that the functionalist, marxist or structuralist totalizing paradigms offered us. Neither do the features of the social entity, nor the models of communication allow them-selves to be thought in such unified way today. The explosion of this unit is the topic of the debate on the relevance and sense of a theory of communication in a world where globalization "reconverts" in the market the means and the processes. The text draws the map of this debate. Because of that, it is important to take into account two periods of time: the first one, the opening by sociologists of Leicester and Madrid in the late eighties, and the second period, in the nineties, when the idea of the information society emerged, substituting the post-industrial one. ; ¿Qué concepciones de lo social y qué modelos de comunicación nos permiten insertar hoy la investigación en los procesos de transformación de la vida política y cultural de nuestros países? La respuesta a esa pregunta es actualmente bastante más oscura y compleja, ya que ahora no contamos con las seguridades que nos ofrecían los paradigmas totalizadores del funcionalismo, el marxismo o el estructuralismo. Ni las figuras de lo social ni los modelos de comunicación se dejan pensar hoy tan unificadamente. Del estallido de esa unidad habla el debate sobre la pertinencia y el sentido de la teoría de la comunicación en un mundo en el que la globalización "reconvierte" mercadológicamente los medios y los procesos. El texto traza el mapa de ese debate. Para ello, se remite a dos tiempos: el de su apertura por sociólogos de Leicester y de Madrid ya a fines de los años ochenta, y un segundo tiempo, el que ya entrados los noventa emerge el paso de la idea de una sociedad postindustrial a la de sociedad de la información.

Los desafíos estratégicos de la sociedad de la información
Este artículo ofrece una reflexión sobre la llamada sociedad de la información con el propósito de hacer visibles algunos de los desafíos que están en la base de este proceso histórico. En primer lugar, se afirma que la posibilidad de comprender la envergadura de las actuales transformaciones tecnológicas pasa pardójicamente por la no reducción de los cambios socioculturales a su dimensión tecnológica, ya que se deja por fuera la especificidad de lo que socialmente se produce, como si esto fuera mero efecto de lo técnico. En segundo lugar, se plantea la necesidad de hacer explícita la relación constitutiva entre los nuevos derechos que la propia informatización de la sociedad entraña y los ya reconocidos derechos del hombre, de modo que los derechos de los ciudadanos a la comunicación pública del conocimiento se tornen aún más decisivos en las nuevas condiciones de hegemonía tecnológica del saber y de las presiones mercantiles sobre el proceso mismo de su producción y circulación. Por último, el artículo llama la atención sobre que en América Latina el desarrollo de las redes digitales está marcado todavía por una concepción sumamente instrumental que está impidiendo instertarlas en los planes nacionales de desarrollo nacional y de democratización local.
