Abstract
Background and Purpose
This study is based on the assumption that the novel, which is a modern narrative form, reflects the canon of the period in which it was written. In this context, the study tries to show how human resources management practices were carried out in large-scale industrial units in a period when the human resources management function was not specialized, with The Jungle novel by Upton Sinclair.
Design/Methodology/Approach:
The study is based on a typology that Bruce E. Kaufman used while describing the early history of US HRM. Kaufman lists fourteen factors that characterize early HRM. One of them is the revealing activities of the Progressive movement. Therefore, the novel is considered here as a means of disclosure. Designed on this basis, the study analyses The Jungle novel around the following themes: the foreman's empire, child labour, occupational health and safety, wages, job insecurity, career, and the blue-collar/white-collar divide.
Results
The novel shows that although the scale of manufacturing units grew in the early 1900s, human management practices were not yet institutionalized and specialized. Therefore, HRM routines are carried out with the arbitrary attitude of foremen, wages are below the natural wage level, child labour is widely used, and there is a working life full of risks in terms of occupational health and safety.
Conclusion
When the narrative of the novel about human management is read in parallel with the academic studies describing the period, the parallelism between the two narratives shows why the novels can be used as material for academic studies.

Purpose: to analyze the situation of age discrimination at work and to give some reflections from job ads in the case of Turkey. Design/Method/Approach of the research: This study presents a limited depiction of age discrimination occurring in Turkey by analyzing job ads. Findings: One of the most critical demographic issues for the entire world, especially for the advanced world, is aging. It is essential as it necessitates some critical regulations that have economic and social consequences. During this aging trend, job seekers over a certain age in labor markets face age discrimination. Although many countries, both developed and developing, have some legal regulations against age discrimination, it remains a crucial form of discrimination. Where we can easily see this kind of discrimination is job ads. This study examined more than fifteen hundred job ads posted by İŞKUR, state-affiliated Employment Agency of Turkey, for the cities of Marmara Region of Turkey were examined. Nearly 20% of all job ads is indicating some statement for age limit. Research limitations/Future Research: Although just the age value indicated by employers in the ads itself does not mean an absolute age discrimination rate, 20 % is a vital implication for that kind of discrimination, and also, this figure implies the need for detailed further studies. Bu çalışma, klasik modernitenin 'nesnel bilgi' iddialarının karşısında postmodernitenin 'bir inşa olarak bilgi' yaklaşımına dayanarak belirli alanların, cari ihtiyaçlara bir cevap olarak doğduğunu ya da bu alanlardaki söylemlerin cari ihtiyaçlara göre icat edildiğini, evirildiğini ya da değiştiğini öne sürmektedir. Çalışma, bu iddiasını eğitim ve geliştirme alanının gelişimi üzerinde temellendirmektedir. Bu temellendirmeyi, akışkan bir dünyada küresel yaşlanmanın beraberinde getirmiş olduğu sorunların bir ..zümü olarak eğitim ve geliştirme alanının rolüne odaklanarak yapmaktadır. Çalışma öncelikle postmodernitenin bilgi ile olan ilişkisini ortaya koymaktadır. Burada postmodernitenin mutlak bilgiye karşı mesafeli duruşu ve bilgiyi sosyal bir inşa olarak ele alan yaklaşım gösterilmektedir. Çalışma daha sonra küresel yaşlanma meselesini verilerle ele alıp son kısımda ise bu hususların eğitim ve geliştirme alanı için ne anlama geldiğini göstermektedir.
