"In June 2009, when the Nigerian capital market was in freefall and the banking sector was close to collapse, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi was appointed as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). What followed was a five-year tenure of crisis management. The sub-prime mortgage crisis in the US and the wider economic and financial crises experienced world-wide provide a backdrop to this vivid account. In Banking Reform In Nigeria, Yomi Makanjuola recounts how emerging and less-developed countries like Nigeria embarked on reforms to rescue their financial systems, achieve financial stability and ward off economic recession, while the world's attention was focused on unfolding events in the US and G-20 economies. The book highlights Nigeria's experience in the last decade from the standpoint of the CBN, reviewing events preceding the crisis, the intervention process, the post-intervention fallout and, lastly, lessons learnt from administered reforms. This book provides an in-depth analysis of the financial events that unfolded in Nigeria throughout the last ten years, and would be an invaluable reference point for academics in African finance and to those with in interest in the African and global banking fields. The study was aimed at determining the prevalence and predictive factors associated with alcohol and other psychoactive substance use among medical students of the University of Ilorin. A self administered interview schedule consisting of WHO Students Drug Use Survey Questionnaire, and the General Health Questionnaire-12 were administered to a weighted proportionate sample of the respondents. The most currently used substances were mild stimulants (19.4%), alcohol (12.5%), hypnosedatives (3.4%), tobacco (1.7%), cannabis (1.7%), opioids (0.9%) and organic solvents (0.4%). Parents' alcohol use, respondents perceived harm of alcohol use, level of religiosity, peers' influence were found to have significant association with current alcohol use. There was no significant association between respondent's perceived harm of substance use and current use of tobacco, hypnosedatives, mild stimulants and cannabis. Eighty five percent of respondents had a GHQ score of 0-2 (negative) while 14.7% had a score of 3-12 (positive). There was no significant association between psychiatric morbidity on one hand and current or lifetime substance use on the other. We concluded that while the prevalence of current use of some psychoactive substances has reduced over the past 6 years, others have increased. It was suggested that planners of medical education should continue to lay emphasis on the risks of psychoactive substance use as part of the medical school curriculum. Other governmental and non-governmental bodies should also continue to plan and implement campaigns against substance use, not only among medical students, but the society in general.
Objective: The study aimed at assessing the knowledge and socio-demographic determinants on occupational hazard prevention among automobile mechanics in Akure South Local Government (AKSLG), Ondo State, Nigeria. Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional design was utilized with automobile mechanic serving as the study population. Respondents were selected by stratified random sampling technique. The study population included 231 respondents from 13 units within the AKSLG. Self-developed questionnaire was administered for data collection. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation and Regression model at p < 0.05Results: Participants' age ranged between 20-50 years and majority had above 15 years of experience with monthly income above ₦58,000 ($161). The findings revealed that most (62.0%) of the respondents had fair knowledge of occupational hazard. Also, 38.0% of the respondents had poor knowledge on the prevention of occupational hazard. Significant relationship was found between years of experience; knowledge about occupational hazard prevention and occupational hazard prevention among respondents with p-values of 0.005 and 0.007 respectively. Conclusion: Socio-demographic variable of years of experience and knowledge of automobile mechanics about occupational hazards prevention had significant relationship on prevention of occupational hazards, therefore measures to enhance knowledge about occupational hazards should be implemented to improve occupational hazard prevention among automobile mechanics. Keywords: Automobile mechanics, Knowledge, Occupational hazard Prevention, Akure
This study determined the degree of satisfaction with various aspects of life in patients with affective disorders and schizophrenia in a Nigerian tertiary hospital. We compared quality-of-life (QOL) at onset-of-illness (first episode) with QOL at time of study and identified sociodemographic and clinical variables that may predict QOL. All consenting patients with ICD-10 compatible diagnosis of schizophrenia ( n = 100) and affective disorders ( n = 35) receiving treatment in the study center during the study period were interviewed. The WHOQOL-Bref was used to assess respondents' subjective QOL, and a data-collection sheet assessed objective domains of QOL. Respondents with schizophrenia and affective disorders had a good outcome in terms of objective QOL scores. In both groups, however, the subjective ratings were poor as the illness progresses. We conclude that in Nigerian hospital cases, patients with schizophrenia andaffective disorders have a good outcome in terms of objective QOL scores, which are not in consonance with their subjective ratings. Marital status and employment status are predictive of QOL
This study aimed at assessing the deplorable state of environmental degradation and waste disposal compliance in markets across the three senatorial districts in Ogun State. This study investigated the literacy level of waste disposal among the traders in the markets in relation to the principles of sustainable development. In doing so, this work considered the use of documentary mode of teaching in making environmental literacy more engaging and realistic through environmental education. This will help in formulating guidelines on how positive attitude towards waste disposal can be achieved through environmental literacy as a vehicle to realize the educational agenda of sustainable development which cannot be over-emphasized. The research employed a mixed-method research. Focus groups were selected from the markets within the sampled three districts of the state. 270 traders of different groups of interest were selected into the focus groups and 16 market heads were also interviewed. Result showed that the market users have to be educated of the various possible dangers of the degradations they engage in unconsciously. Government is therefore expected to partner market communities, cooperate bodies and non-governmental agencies with interest in healthy and safe environment to raise the awareness level of the market communities in environmental management.
BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic has created excess weighting lists to access Mental Health Services in the UK (Stats Wales, 2021). It is important to find effective solutions to alleviate the pressures that Mental Health services experience. The NHS Five Year Forward View encourages the development of new social prescribing empowerment-based interventions to supplement existing mental health programmes (Mental Health Taskforce, 2016). The EmotionMind Dynamic (EMD) is a lifestyle coaching programme that supports individuals suffering from anxiety or depression referred from the health and social care sectors. EMD offers a unique, non-clinical mixed-modality approach combining coaching, mentoring, counselling skills, teaching and mindfulness.
MethodsSocial Return On Investment (SROI) methodology is applied to evaluate the EMD service. The aim of the SROI analysis is to develop a programme-level theory of change to establish how inputs (e.g. costs, staffing) are converted into outputs (e.g. numbers of clients seen), and subsequently into outcomes that matter to clients impacted by EMD service (e.g. improved mental wellbeing). Wellbeing valuation will quantify and value outcomes using two value sets. The SROI mixed-method approach collects quantitative and qualitative data from questionnaires and interviews with former face-to-face EMD clients as well a new clients, undertaking the online blended learning programme.
FindingsInitial results indicate that the social prescribing face-to-face EMD programme generated positive social value ratios ranging from £9 to £23 for every £1 invested. In addition, the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES) which measures participant's self-reported self-efficacy and confidence indicated that the face-to-face EMD participants experienced improved mental wellbeing and resilience as a result of participating in the EMD lifestyle coaching programme. Sensitivity analyses was conducted with Social Value Bank (SVB) figures for improved confidence and confirmed assumptions that former EMD clients experienced positive mental wellbeing improvements as a result of undertaking the lifestyle coaching programme.
ConclusionsThis is the first study to undertake an SROI analysis of a social prescribing lifestyle coaching programme aimed at improving mental wellbeing and resilience. Phase one of this novel SROI study of the face-to-face EMD clients indicates that the EMD lifestyle coaching programme has the potential to generate positive social value ratios. Phase two analysis of the online EMD blended learning programme will compare the effectiveness of the two lifestyle coaching formats: face to face and the online blended format to improve mental wellbeing and self-efficacy by participating in this innovative lifestyle coaching programme.
