Disabled Africa: Rights Not Welfare
In: Index on censorship, Band 27, Heft 1, S. 177-194
ISSN: 0306-4220
An overview of the disability rights movement in late 20th-century Africa is presented. Although additional financial & medical resources are required to address the problems of Africa's growing disabled population, it is contended that certain African sociocultural perceptions & practices must be abandoned or reformulated, eg, female genital mutilation, to decrease the number of individuals with disabilities. Despite the provision of certain rights & services for disabled individuals in several African nations, it is maintained that disabled people in Africa continue to be marginalized from African societies. Nevertheless, specific nations' attempts to improve the lives of disabled peoples deserve recognition, eg, Zimbabwe's creation of multiple organizations for disabled people. To ensure complete democratic participation in African nations, it is argued that people with disabilities must be consulted & included in decision-making processes affecting their treatment. J. W. Parker
