Drones and Eucharist
In: Religions ; Volume 10 ; Issue 7
In the post-9/11 world, the use of drone strikes has become a critical aspect of U.S. Military strategy in the War on Terror. While the ethics of drones have been argued from a theological perspective, this essay argues that a deeper, more theoretical understanding of drones is necessary in order to mount an adequate theological response. The author argues that the particular epistemological foundations by which drone strikes are justified must be given a theological corrective and that the Eucharist is the site for such a correction. This essay ultimately argues that the Eucharist shows the epistemology that undergirds the use of drones to be severely lacking and that under the judgment of the Eucharist the use of such technology is incompatible with the identity of the Church.

Reconstructing decision-making dynamics during public health crises by applying data science to public records
In: Journal of Public Health Policy
Public health policies can dramatically shape government responses to emerging public health crises. In cases where a response is inadequate, it's natural to seek improvements to these policies to achieve better results in future crises. However, while policies and outcomes are usually visible, the complex dynamics that link them are seldom obvious. Obscure social network structures, power and information asymmetries, and political agendas all influence the translation of policy to action or inaction. Intergovernmental communications are often the only primary sources for researchers investigating these hidden but crucial factors. Public records laws in many countries make such documents available upon request, but their structure, format, and scale are rarely accessible in practice. Fortunately, recent advances in free and open-source data science tools are making this problem tractable. In this visual brief, we demonstrate using such tools to mine a large image dataset and reconstruct decision-making during the Flint Water Crisis in Michigan, USA.

America's new racial politics: white protectionism, racial reparations, and American identity
In: China International Strategy Review
The United States has been shaped by clashes between rival "racial orders" or "racial policy alliances" since the nation's very beginning. For the last half century, those contests have chiefly been between proponents of "color-blind" and "race-conscious" public policies. Today, however, the nation's dominant racial policy alliances are transforming into ones centered on significantly new themes. The racially conservative "color-blind" policy alliance is, under the leadership of President Donald Trump, becoming an alliance promising "white protectionism." The "race conscious" policy alliance is, with the mobilizations around the slogan of Black Lives Matter, becoming an alliance focused on "racial reparations" to end "systemic racism". These new, even more polarized racial policy alliances have counterparts across the globe, and they are likely to shape political life for many years to come.

The campaign for a National Strategy for Gypsy site provision and the role of Public Health activism in the 1960–1970s
In: Journal of Public Health Policy
We trace the post-war evolution of a national approach to providing caravan sites for Gypsies and Travellers—something essential to protect the health of that population in the United Kingdom (UK). Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, the late Norman Dodds MP championed in Parliament the plight of the UK's Gypsies and other nomads. He was instrumental in galvanising support for the 1968 Caravan Sites Act. The vision of influential individuals working in public and environmental health surmounted practical considerations and local opposition to implement the national programme of site provision envisioned by the Act. We detail this hitherto neglected aspect of Gypsy politics and policy development. In doing so, we highlight the transformative potential of public health and argue for a return to the comprehensive vision motivating these pioneers in the 1960s and 1970s.
