Since Xi Jinping took office as General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, he has been tightening ideological control across many fronts. This article investigates how the framing of televised confessions facilitates Xi's rule. Originating from the intra-Party disciplinary technique of self-criticism, the recent resurgence of mediated confessions reflects Xi's pursued strategy in tackling social and political challenges. Applying critical discourse analysis to the case of the disappeared Swedish bookseller Gui Minhai, this paper shows the way in which the framing of Gui's televised confession follows Xi's so-called rule of law agenda and selectively appeals to traditional Chinese family values. The paper argues that the propaganda value of the televised confession from a little-known, non-Party confessant lies in its banality, which blends into the Party's everyday narration. The resurgence of confessions might suggest a regression towards Maoist-style campaigns, but more audience-oriented research is needed to address this issue fully. (JCCA/GIGA)

Previous studies of Chinese learners' language learning and identity construction have overlooked the gender factor. This study investigates the language learning narratives of two Chinese 'New Women', the aim being to reveal the connection between their language learning and gender identity construction, where national identity is the prominent variable. The theoretical framework applied is Darvin and Norton's 'model of investment', and the narrative analysisrevealed there are intra-dimensional differences under the general label of New Women. The English learner displayed better strategic use of language in resisting disadvantaged positions and in constructing her 'ideal woman' identity. The analysis also revealed that language plays its role in generating differences through the soft and invisible power of ideology and shifting capital, both of which are embedded in the daily use of language.

AbstractArid regions in Northwestern China, such as Ganzhou District, are crucial for agriculture but face challenges due to water scarcity. This study employs a coupling coordination model to analyse the environmental impact of agricultural water use in Ganzhou District and dissect the tension between agricultural development and ecological concerns. Despite an overall positive trend, the study reveals relatively poor coordination between water use and environmental protection, along with uneven spatial distribution. Examining the tension between agricultural expansion and its environmental repercussions, this study offers a reference for efforts to promote sustainable practices in agriculture and environmental management in oases.

Consumers are facing a trade-off between the benefits of an increase in the length of the shelf life of food, such as low food costs, and the potential health damages caused by food preservatives. However, few studies in the current literature place emphasis on food preservatives, neither from a scientific perspective nor from an economic perspective. This causes a lot of controversies about government regulations. By constructing a theoretical framework and using a survey of 293 customers from 25 supermarkets in Beijing, this paper studies the consumer attitude towards food preservatives and attempts to fill the gap in the current literature. The main findings include that food price, and consumers' age and income are important for the willingness to pay (WTP) for 'preservative-free food' in Beijing. In particular, food price and consumer incomes are positively correlated with the WTP and there might be an inverted U-shaped relationship between age and WTP. This study indicates that consumers in Beijing are willing to pay a very high premium for preservative-free food 62% for preservative-free Mooncakes compared to conventional ones.
