The objective of this study is to provide evidence for the existence of threshold effects in trade openness, which affects the female labour force participation rate (FLFPR) in Asian countries. The authors employ the proportion of export, import and total trade volume to gross domestic product to denote export and import dependency and trade openness, respectively. The panel threshold regression results indicate that there exists an optimal value in the correlation between trade openness and FLFPR below which an increase in trade openness will enhance the FLFPR; an adverse relationship exists when trade openness exceeds the threshold value. This relationship is attributed to the trade-off between the cost reduction effect and the technology channel. Furthermore, the authors further categorise trade openness into export and import dependency. The findings reveal that export dependency also has a single threshold effect on FLFPR, while import dependency exerts a negative effect on FLFPR regardless of threshold effect. Therefore, the government could promote female participation in the labour force by regulating the export policy.

AbstractThe nature of mini-documentary is to be true to the story. But being true is not necessarily the replicate of the original, instead, the director can restructure the story based on the original and make it more artistic and enjoyable for the audience. It would be ideal if viewers from different walks of life can take pleasure in interpreting the film in their own ways. A recap of the documentaries about China both from home and abroad reveals either the bias or superficialness to a large extent. The long-term and systematic representation of the people and stories about China is what we need to shed the bias and the misrepresentations. This paper takes the Looking China Youth Film Project as the case to analyze a cross-cultural communication model that enables the international young filmmakers to experience and know about China.

Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) protein is widely acknowledged as a potential animal protein source due to its large biomass with excellent nutritional and utilisation properties. However, safety assessments of Antarctic krill protein (AKP) are highly warranted before its use as human food. The present work thus assessed the safety of AKP in a Kunming mice model through acute toxicity and a 28-day feeding study, where the Kunming mice were fed with AKP or control diets. In the acute toxicity study, a single oral dose of 10 g/kg bodyweight (BW) AKP caused no death or abnormal effects in male and female mice, and the bodyweight gain remained within the normal range. In the repeated dose 28-day oral toxicity study, AKP was orally administered to Kunming mice at the doses of 2.5, 5.0, and 10.0 g/kg BW/day for 28 days. The absolute and relative liver weight gained was only observed in the mice administered with high-dose of AKP. However, this increase was incidental as no weight gain or histopathological alterations were observed in the main groups. These findings were consistent with the normal background lesions in the clinically normal mice used in the present work, which were considered spontaneous and/or incidental in nature and unrelated to the treatment. These results demonstrated that AKP did not exert significant acute and subacute toxicity upon oral administration to Kunming mice.
