This book examines Russia's 2013 anti-gay laws and their implications for the Sochi 2014 Olympics. Lenskyj argues that Putin's Russia and the International Olympic Committee wield power in similar ways, as evident in undemocratic governance, fraudulent voting processes, hypocrisy and absence of accountability, Sexual Diversity and the Sochi 2014 Olympics: No More Rainbows examines Russia's 2013 anti-gay laws and their implications for the Sochi 2014 Olympics. A century in the making, these laws reflect decades of sexual repression in the former Soviet Union. Despite societal changes since 1993, there is little acceptance of sexual diversity, and the 2013 anti-gay law has led to an increase homophobic violence. In its inadequate response to yet another human rights crisis in an Olympic host country, the International Olympic Committee relied on the myth that sport is apolitical. Once again, this strategy was successful. Magical thinking that sport unites the world led many critics to oppose an Olympic boycott, although some supported boycotts of sponsors' products. Helen Jefferson Lenskyj argues that Putin's Russia and the IOC are, in fact, well matched. Common features include undemocratic governance, fraudulent voting processes, hypocrisy and moral bankruptcy in leadership, homophobia, lesbian/gay invisibility, and promotion of 'sport-as-special' propaganda

This article examines the notion of sustainable sport in the context of preparations for the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney. More specifically, the article critiques the strategy of `corporate environmentalism', which the organizers have deployed in their attempt to remediate the site of the Games.

This article analyses the contradictory constructions of gender relations in the popular Australian sport magazine Inside Sport. The investigation shows that, while overt sexual exploitation of women is still present, particularly in the pictorial content, more complex marginalizing practices are also in evidence. Furthermore, it will be argued that the juxtaposition of critical text and exploitative graphics is organized to convey a sense of `balanced' coverage and representation. The magazine's formula of men's sports/women's bodies reflects, constructs and perpetuates beliefs about hegemonic masculinity and emphasized femininity in Australian society.

This is an analysis of events surrounding the Toronto, Canada and Sydney, Australia Olympic bid processes, with a specific focus on corporate and media attempts to manufacture public consent, and individual and group accommodation and resistance to such attempts. Print materials, including the official publications of the bid committees and newspaper coverage of events in both cities, constitute the primary source of data. It is argued that the two bid campaigns illustrate winning and losing strategies for organizing consent, with the losers (Toronto) being in fact the winners when judged by the criterion of democratic decision making.
