Ideas associated with the phrase 'revolution of rising expectations' suggest that those in underdeveloped Ru areas who have more contact with the modern world are more likely to support the symbols of radical change in their country. Analysis of opinion surveys in Brazil in early 1963 does not support this hyp. Evidence comes mainly from 958 interviews in 8 Ru locations in Northeast Brazil, an area where organizers were at work. The more isolated peasants-ie, those who lived in the countryside rather than the small towns & who used MM least-were the most likely to support the radical pol'al symbols of the time: F. Castro & F. Juliao. This does not appear due to their greater poverty nor to more direct contact with the organizers, but to greater insulation from the negative meanings & sanctions associated with these symbols in the nat'l COMM system.
