Is it possible to do something more meaningful than mothering? As a young Catholic girl who grew up in the American Midwest on white bread and Jesus, Erin S. Lane was given two options for a life well-lived: Mother or Mother Superior. She could marry a man and mother her own children, or she could marry God, so to speak, and mother the world's children. Both were good outcomes for someone else's life. Neither would fit the shape of hers. This study examines the relationships between the age at which female juvenile offenders receive their first sentencing and individual risk factors, family risk factors, and race. The individual risk factors include dropping out of school, physical abuse, sexual abuse, prostitution, substance abuse, gang involvement, poverty, pregnancy, and the existence of co‐defendants. The family risk factors include parents' marital status, familial criminal activity, education level of parents, and receipt of public assistance. The results showed individual risk factors to have a statistically significant relationship with the dependent variable, age at first sentencing. Family risk factors did not have a statistically significant relationship to the dependent variable. Socio‐demographic risk factors were found to be statistically significant only indirectly, through the individual risk factor scale.

What might it take for politically marginalized residents to challenge cuts in public spending that threaten to harm their health and wellbeing? Specifically, how did residents of Flint, Michigan contribute to the decision of an austerity regime, which was not accountable to them, to spend millions to switch to a safe water source? Relying on evidence from key interviews and newspaper accounts, we examine the influence and limitations of residents and grassroots groups during the 18-month period between April 2014 and October 2015 when the city drew its water from the Flint River. We find that citizen complaints alone were not sufficiently able to convince city officials or national media of widespread illness caused by the water. However, their efforts resulted in partnerships with researchers whose evidence bolstered their claims, thus inspiring a large contribution from a local foundation to support the switch to a clean water source. Thus, before the crisis gained national media attention, and despite significant constraints, residents' sustained organization—coupled with scientific evidence that credentialed local claims—motivated the return to the Detroit water system. The Flint case suggests that residents seeking redress under severe austerity conditions may require partnerships with external scientific elites.

Background: We explore the roles of trust, distrust, and the prevailing socio-political context to better understand why people from ethnic minority communities are less likely to be blood donors compared to people from White communities. Recruiting more ethnic minority donors will enhance representativeness, reduce inequality, and help meet the clinical need to increase the proportion of blood with Ro Kell antigen to treat Sickle Cell Disease (SCD).Study Design and Methods: A 2 (Donor-Status: current vs non-donors) by 4 (Ethnicity: White vs, Asian, vs Mixed Race vs Black people) quasi-experiment (N = 981) was conducted to examine perceptions of trust/distrust and their influence on willingness to donate blood, within the socio-political context of the Windrush scandal and Brexit.Results: We identified five domains of trust ('National Health Service [NHS] and staff', 'NHS Blood and Transplant', 'outgroups', 'individuals', and 'politics'), and a single domain of conditional distrust domain. Trust across all the domains was lower, and 'conditional distrust' higher for ethnic minorities. Trust in 'individuals' and 'NHSBT' predicted willingness to donate in non-donors from ethnic minorities and White non-donors, respectively. Concerns about the Windrush scandal were related to lower political trust. Viewing Brexit as 'positive for the UK' was related to lower trust across domains and reduced willingness to donate in White non-donors through its influence on reduced trust in NHSBT.Conclusion: Distinct domains of trust and distrust are identified, and targeting 'trust in others' through conditional cooperation is recommended as a strategy to increase donor numbers from ethnic minority communities.
