This book invites readers to engage with the rich and complex debates of contemporary English education, outlining new possibilities to revive the teaching of English. Bringing together diverse voices and insights from educators in English across the primary, secondary, further and higher education phases, the book offers reflections and critical engagement with the lived experiences of English teachers and pupils in contemporary educational spaces. Each chapter includes example vignettes from classrooms which tell something of the story of English teaching today. The book considers how politics and policy have worked to close the opportunities of the English classroom for self-expression and critical engagement with the world - a murder. The authors then offer an exploration of the opportunities for a re-imagining of English - the murmurs of teachers and pupils that resist such closures. The chapters explore new thinking, new practices and new possibilities for English classrooms as inclusive, emancipatory, critical and creative spaces. Offering a thoughtful and hopeful dialogue from practising English teacher-researchers, the book will be essential reading for researchers and students of English language and literature education, as well as trainee teachers of English.

Interest in how to promote student wellbeing in schools is growing. Research shows that some drivers of wellbeing are universal (e.g., bullying), but others are country specific. No prior study has investigated this question in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where geographic, socio-demographic and school type differences in student wellbeing are substantial. We address this gap by using multilevel regression to analyse data from the PISA 2018 study. Our focus is on life satisfaction, positive affect, negative affect, meaning and purpose in life, and mental health symptoms of internalizing difficulties. We find large school effects on student wellbeing. School resources are of little importance, whereas factors related to time use, social connections, health and body image, positive school climate, and feelings around school and education are important correlates. These factors help explain a substantial part of the wellbeing inequalities observed across types of schools in the UAE.

Interest in adolescents' wellbeing and mental health is growing worldwide, but little research in this area has been conducted in certain world regions and countries such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Geographic, socio-demographic and school type differences in adolescent wellbeing and mental health are commonly observed in the field, and the UAE is a diverse country where these types of differences have been found for other outcomes (notably, academic). However, no prior national study has explored these differences in terms of wellbeing and mental health in this nation. In this study, we address this gap by investigating differences across emirates, gender, socio-economic status, immigrant status, school sector and school curriculum for overall life satisfaction, positive affect, negative affect, meaning and purpose in life, and internalizing difficulties. We use cross-sectional data from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) study from 2015 and 2018. We find substantial geographic, socio-demographic and school type differences in levels (2018) of wellbeing and mental health and declines (2015-2018) of wellbeing, and these differences vary across distinct domains. Results also confirm that there is no trade-off between academic competence and wellbeing and mental health, with evidence of a small positive association with wellbeing.

In most education systems, students with an immigrant background perform worse academically compared to native students. However, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), differences emerge in the opposite direction and the national-expatriate gap in academic competence is equivalent to almost three years of schooling. This gap is a concern in the UAE, where national students mainly attend public schools and expatriates, mostly private schools. To investigate the competence gap between national and expatriate students, we estimate group differences and conduct linear regression analysis using data from the 2018 Programme for International Student Assessment. Results show that the gap varies by emirate and country of origin and is greater among boys, better-off students and in private schools. Between 33% and 47% of this gap is explained by school type, whether public or private. We offer recommendations; however, in a country characterized by 85% expatriates and a maturing education policy, challenges remain, but may serve to pave the way for other high expatriate nations in development.
