In this introduction to the special symposium on "Reflection, Evaluation, Integration", the editor establishes the theme of world politics change to argue that academics & practitioners must coordinate efforts in the spirit of tolerance for each other's ideas. The diversity within the field of world politics in that it does not have a common set of universally agreed-upon principles nor a unique paradigm that allows rapid constrains dynamic research & development along a common path. The challenge to prevent research from becoming sterile can be mitigated by a world politics focus on global interactions that have policy implications, particularly since the phenomena of war is central to the discipline, & the complex political information globally rests with theory of experts. Of all the challenges facing world politics it is globalization, deterrence, & terrorism that are of particular concern. The lack of scientific agreement on the implications of weapons of mass destruction is dangerous, as well as the policy dilemma facing all policymakers after 9/11 that deterrence logic does not apply to non-governmental actors who cannot be easily traced or retaliated against. The author concludes that world politics must change to face these problems with a respect for evidence, & a commitment to appear cool findings even when they contradict our long-held beliefs. Demographic & social scientific research suggests, with near certainty, that by the end of this century, the two Asian giants, China & India, will have surpassed the United States on certain key indicators of national power. The implications for the future of world politics are profound, but the outcomes are not predetermined. If the coming power transition is managed wisely, there is an opportunity for continued peace among the Great Powers. If the transition proceeds confrontationally, as many have in the past, a serious global conflict is in the offing.
