The availability of space-based capabilities is a decisive prerequisite for the effect-oriented employment of armed forces within the scope of a comprehensive security and defence policy. In the enlarged task spectrum the Bundeswehr is thus becoming an increasingly important customer in a commercially governed market. Therefore, the armed forces need to achieve a sufficient capability in terms of knowledge and judgement in order to be able define their own interests in respect to the development of space-related projects. As a competence holder for the third dimension the Air Force is particularly interested in the goal-oriented linking and extending of airborne and spacebased capabilities as these constitute an essential precondition for the effective employment of modern air forces. This is the reason for the numerous impulse-generating initiatives of the Air Force - on the basis of which the Bundeswehr has recently taken important steps - in order to position itself in a future-oriented way in view of the increasing relevance of the use of outer space.
