Using the example of an obscenity case in Mecklenburg County, NC, the legal test for obscenity is examined. A cross-section of residents (N = 129) were assigned to view sexually explicit materials & were asked to judge the material's appeal to a prurient interest before & after the viewing. Results suggest that when respondents view specific materials rather than make hypothetical judgments about obscenity, they will produce more accurate assessments of community standards. 5 Tables, 45 References.
