This study examines systems of social support in assisted living facilities. A sample of 600 assisted living residents were interviewed to identify three systems of social support: formal, informal, and resident. The resident system of social support was found to be key in the utilization of the informal and formal social support systems. Cognitive status was found to be the only resident characteristic significantly influencing use in all three systems.
