Low-income older adults have historically received institutionally based care when they were unable to care for themselves and there was a lack of sufficient formal and informal support to allow them to remain in their own homes. In 1981, revision of federal Medicaid legislation permitted states to provide home-and community-based services (HCBS) for older adults at risk of nursing facility placement in an attempt to prevent unnecessary placement and to offer choice. However, Medic-aid-HCBS applicants may have to wait up to 45 days or longer for approval of their financial application. During those 45 days, the applicant may enter a nursing facility because Medicaid-HCBS was not available soon enough to prevent placement. This article presents research on an instrument to help case managers initiate community-based in-home services for the lowest-income Medicaid applicants within 3 to 5 days of initial assessment.

Multiracial families comprise a rapidly growing population in the United States. This volume addresses this population, so often neglected in the counselling literature. Following an historical overview, the authors: address both the special needs and special strengths of multiracial families; explore the challenges facing interracially married couples; examine social and cultural issues pertinent to parenting multiracial children; and translate results of biracial identity development research into counselling practice

The decision to move into assisted living (AL) can be viewed as a life-changing process for older adults and their families; and each may possess differing views of this process. This qualitative study examined the AL decision-making process as described by twenty-two older adult and family member dyads. Participants described emotional and logistical components related to the AL moving decision. Further, fifteen of twenty-two dyads expressed conflicting or differing views of the AL moving decision. Our discussion examines the need for future studies to explore the impact of family and older adult disagreements on the older adult's AL adjustment; the necessity for community-based agencies and AL settings to provide social services over the duration of the decision-making process; and the importance of employing social workers skilled in family practice in the AL setting.

The data were collected with the CMS detector during the LHC commissioning in December 2009. For non-single-diffractive interactions, the average charged-hadron transverse momentum is measured to be 0.46 +/- 0.01 (stat.) +/- 0.01 (syst.) GeV/c at 0.9 TeV and 0.50 +/- 0.01 (stat.) +/- 0.01 (syst.) GeV/c at 2.36 TeV, for pseudorapidities between -2.4 and +2.4. At these energies, the measured pseudorapidity densities in the central region, dN(ch)/d eta vertical bar(vertical bar eta vertical bar and pp collisions. The results at 2.36 TeV represent the highest-energy measurements at a particle collider to date.

This prediction is tested by measuring the mass difference between the top quark and antiquark (Delta m(t) = m(t) - m((t) over bar)) that are produced in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, using events with a muon or an electron and at least four jets in the final state. The analysis is based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.6 fb(-1) collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, and yields a value of Delta m(t) = 0.15 0.19 (stat) +/- 0.09(syst) GeV, which is consistent with the SM expectation. This result is significantly more precise than previously reported measurements. (C) 2017 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier B.V.

The data set was collected with the CMS detector and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.3 fb(- 1). This is the first cross section measurement for this process.

The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.6 fb(-1) collected in proton-proton collisions at root s = 8 TeV with the CMS experiment at the LHC. Nodeviation from the standard model predictions is observed for these final states. New, improved limits are set on dark matter production and on parameters of models with large extra dimensions. In particular, the first limits from the LHC on branon production are found and significantly extend previous limits from LEP and the Tevatron. An upper limit of 14.0 fb on the cross section is set at the 95% confidence level for events with a monophoton final state with photon transverse momentum greater than 145 GeV and missing transverse momentum greater than 140 GeV.
