Student Loan Debt and Financial Hardships in Health Care Utilization
In: Social development issues: alternative approaches to global human needs, Band 45, Heft 1
ISSN: 2372-014X
This study examines the association between student loan debt and financial hardships in health care utilization among young adults, with a focus on differences by race. This study analyzes data from the 2018 National Financial Capability Study, a publicly available data set, and includes 4,535 young adults in the age groups of 24–35 years. The study results show that student loan debt was related to financial hardships in health care utilization, measured with unpaid medical bills and missed health care services because of costs, after controlling for a range of socioeconomic factors as well as measures of financial knowledge and behaviors. In addition, student loan debt had additional negative influence on missed health care services for minority young adults. Further analyses indicate that among young adults who had outstanding student loans, those with late loan payments were more likely to have unpaid medical bills and missed health care services, compared to those without late loan payments. These findings inform helpful policy and practice implications for improving financial status of young adults with student loans, especially those with late loan payment and minority young adults.
Grandparenting in rural China: A culture-centered approach (CCA) to understand economic inequality and rural labor change
In: Qualitative social work: research and practice, Band 21, Heft 3, S. 602-620
ISSN: 1741-3117
The large-scale rural-to-urban migration in China has resulted in separated families and left-behind family members in the countryside. Various socioeconomic changes took place in rural China's daily life due to migration, which provides unique perspectives to understand the hidden costs of the national discourse on development. This study aims to reveal how rural grandparenting resulted from the uneven economic development between a Chinese city and a village. A dual-site ethnographic study was conducted in one Northern village and one Southern city. Interviews, focus groups, and participant observation were used to form methodological triangulation to understand how socioeconomic features have made grandparenting necessary. Instead of focusing only on grandparents' daily responsibilities of taking care of their grandchildren, we compared grandparents' and parents' views on the changes in grandparents' socioeconomic roles, feelings of loneliness, and economic independence, as well as grandchildren's socialization processes. The study showcases grandparenting as having a social significance larger than being individualized acts of family care.
A phenomenological case study on immigrant workers' gambling addiction in Korea
In: Asian social work and policy review, Band 13, Heft 2, S. 159-168
ISSN: 1753-1411
AbstractThis study explores the experiences that have led some of Korea's immigrant workers into gambling addiction and examines possible social welfare services that could support treatment. Immigrant workers' gambling experience as aliens in Korea was analyzed through the methodology of a phenomenological case study. The participants, who voluntarily consented to the study, were five immigrant workers addicted to gambling. Data were collected through one‐on‐one, in‐depth interviews over 6 months, starting in July 2018. The essential themes that emerged in the interviews were "changing strategies for survival," "forgetting oneself without any sense of responsibility or shame," "gambling as routine daily life," "obsession with making a fortune in one go," and "no home to return to." Based on its results, this study makes suggestions for the prevention of gambling addiction in immigrant workers. Further, future research needs to be broadened to analyze nationwide cases of immigrant workers with more diverse demographic backgrounds.
Effect of corporate governance on real activity-based earnings management: evidence from Korea / Įmonių valdymo poveikis, pagrįstas darbo užmokesčio valdymu: Korėjos pavyzdys
This paper aims to determine whether corporate governance affects manager's real operating or investment decision to control reported earnings. Through data analysis of firms listed on the Korean stock exchange, it was found that the aggregated measure of real activity-based earnings management decreases as the size of board is larger or as a greater proportion of external directors sit on the board. Those findings are almost the same, whether a corporate governance index composed by each BOD characteristics is employed, or problem caused by endogenous relationships among variables is controlled. The results provide the first empirical evidence that real activity-based earnings management is influenced by corporate governance structure. This focus on real activity-based earnings management suggests new avenues for research on corporate governance. The results offer some insights for policy makers interested in promoting legislation to ensure strong corporate governance in their nation. Santrauka Šiame straipsnyje siekiama nustatyti, kokią įtaką turi kompanijos vadovo sprendimai, susiję su gaunamų pajamų iš darbuotojų tiesioginės veiklos / operacijų ar investicinių sprendimų kontrole. Tyrime dalyvavo Korėjos kompanijos. Autorių atlikti tyrimai parodė, kad darbuotojų darbo užmokesčio valdymas yra efektyvesnis nei tiesioginė vadovo kontrolė. Straipsnyje minima, kad priėmus sprendimą valdyti darbo užmokesčius, būtina keisti visą įmonės valdymo struktūrą. Analysis of the 2014 "APEC Blue" in Beijing Using More than One Decade of Satellite Observations: Lessons Learned from Radical Emission Control Measures
In: Remote Sensing ; Volume 7 ; Issue 11 ; Pages 15224-15243
During the 2014 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meetings in Beijing, the Chinese government made significant efforts to clear Beijing's sky. The emission control measures were very effective and the improved air quality during the APEC Meetings was called the "APEC Blue". To monitor and estimate how these emission control measures affected air quality in Beijing and its five neighboring large cities (Tianjin, Shijiazhuang, Tangshan, Jinan, and Qingdao), we compared and analyzed the satellite-retrieved Aerosol Optical Thickness (AOT) products of the pre-APEC (18–31 October), APEC (1–11 November), and post-APEC periods (11–31 November) in 2002–2014 and daily PM2.5 measurements of the three periods in 2014 on the ground. Compared with the pre- and post-APEC periods, both ground and satellite observations indicated significantly reduced aerosol loading during the 2014 APEC period in Beijing and its surroundings, but with apparent spatial heterogeneity. For example, the peak value of PM2.5 in Beijing were around 100 µg∙m−3 during the APEC period, however, during the pre- and post-APEC periods, the peak values were up to 290 µg∙m−3. The following temporal correlation analysis of mean AOT values between Beijing and other five cities for the past thirteen years (2002–2014) indicated that the potential emission source regions strongly impacting air quality of Beijing were confined within central and southern Hebei as well as northern and southwestern Shandong, in correspondence with the spatial pattern of Digital Earth Model (DEM) of the study region. In addition to stringent emission control measures, back trajectory analysis indicated that the relatively favorable regional transport pattern might also have contributed to the "APEC Blue" in Beijing. These results suggest that the "APEC Blue" is a temporarily regional phenomenon ; a long-term improvement of air quality in Beijing is still challenging and joint efforts of the whole region are needed.

Effects of Parent Effectiveness Training Program on Family Communication and Flexibility of Korean Parents
In: Asian social work and policy review, Band 7, Heft 3, S. 213-227
ISSN: 1753-1411
This study examines the effects of an 8‐week Parent Effective Training (PET) program on family communication and flexibility. Forty‐two pairs of Korean parents were randomly assigned to either an experimental group that provided the PET program or a control group that did not offer the program. The two groups were compared on pre‐, post‐, and follow‐up measures of PAC(Parent‐Adolescent Communication), ENRICH(Enriching and Nurturing Relationship Issues, Communication and Happiness), and FACES(Family Adaptability Cohesion Evaluation Scale), while controlling for the effects of socio‐demographic variables. Compared with the control group, the experimental group showed significant improvements in family communication between parents and children and between the husband and the wife but no such improvements in family flexibility. These findings suggest that the PET program is a useful short‐term tool for Korean parents wishing to enhance family communication.
