NATO has been and must continue to be a major alliance; and large alliances are expected to bring about big things. While the member states might still be working on formulations to define their existence in the 21st century, NATO actually defines itself by the way in which it is changing and by the type of missions it is undertaking. The member states of NATO and their publics can take pride in the many achievements of the alliance; it is possible, however - even likely - that the most important days and most important missions of NATO are still lying ahead of it.
