AN EVALUATION OF RECENT LITERATURE ON U.S. STATE LEGISLATURES DURING THE LAST TWO DECADES. TOPICS INCLUDE LEGISLATIVE RECRUITMENT AND ELECTIONS, CAREER PATTERNS, ORGANIZATION AND STRUCTURE, ROLES AND NORMS, CONSTITUENCY REPRESENTATION, LEGISLATIVE DECISION-MAKING, BUDGETING AND OVERSIGHT.
IN THIS PAPER, THE AUTHOR EXPLORE VARIABLES THAT MIGHT PLAUSIBLY BE EXPECTED TO HAVE SOME EFFECT ON THE LEVEL OF INDIVIDUAL SUPPORT FOR THE KOREAN LEGISLATURE. THEY HYPOTHESIZE THAT LEGISLATIVE SUPPORT WILL BE HIGHER AMONG PERSONS WHO A) HAVE HIGHER LEVELS OF OCCUPATION AND EDUCATION; B)ARE KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT POLITICS AND PARTICIPATE; AND C)WHO EXPRESS GREATER SATISFACTION WITH THE LEGISLATURE.

In Kentucky, as in many other states, these figures have been available only in the Secretary of State's office, and there has been no compilation of percentages and pluralities necessary for comparative purposes. The source of all the statistics in these volumes is the official records in the office of the Secretary of State in Frankfort, Kentucky. All retu
Every two years American voters turn out to elect several thousand representatives to state legislatures. Only now in Representation in State Legislatures do we have a detailed examination of how these officials perceive their jobs and how they attempt to do them. To provide answers to these questions, Malcolm E. Jewell conducted intensive interviews with 220 members of houses of representatives in nine selected states. He asked each legislator how he kept in touch with his constituents, how he resolved matters of policy, how he sought government resources for his district, and what services

Bipartisanship has become so associated with the conduct of foreign policy that partisanship has virtually been forgotten. In this persuasive study of senatorial politics, Malcolm E. Jewell reasserts the importance of partisanship, arguing that increased party responsibility is the best guarantee for the establishment of sound policy and for the continued support of policy once established. The author bases his conclusions on a study of the Senate during the Truman and Eisenhower administrations.

The 2000 US gubernatorial & state legislature elections are analyzed. After discussing trends in gubernatorial elections since 1984, the outcome of this 2000 election are discussed, emphasizing the major parties' ability to preserve a majority of their gubernatorial seats. It is contended that incumbent candidates in state legislature elections are generally successful in maintaining their seats because of a decrease in the number of seats being contested by candidates from other parties & of the increased cost challengers face in running against incumbents. The outcome from the 2000 state legislature elections are then reported, illustrating the Republican Party's increased control of state legislatures; the election results from several key states are scrutinized to determine if recent outcome trends for the major parties continued. In addition, the results from referenda & initiative issues on state ballots are reported. It is concluded that the Republican Party's slight control over both Congressional houses is expected & suggested that results from state legislature elections demonstrate the dominance of moderate political perspectives among the present-day electorate. 3 Tables, 7 References.
